Bassett push last season's champions all the way

A vastly entertaining match played at high speed and 100% commitment from both sides, saw Bassett match the League Champions in all departments for long periods. The match itself had been earmarked at the start of the season as a good indication of how far the team would have advanced since last season and the whole squad didn't disappoint the coach or the home spectators.

From the kick off, however, concentration for the only time in the game was lacking, when Liden opened the scoring in the first minute. It acted as a wake up call and the game began to see-saw from one end to the other, chances being created at both ends. Good work in mid-field from Ross Barber and Tom James kept Bassett going forward and what was particularly impressive was the way in which the ball was consistently played out of defence through the midfield. A fine save from Joe Brennan in diving to his left to turn a solid drive around the post kept the home side in the game but from the resulting corner Liden scored their second from a downward header 5 minutes from the half-time whistle.

Turning round 2 goals down did scant justice to the hard work that Bassett had put in and straight from the start the home side tore into the visitors. Within 5 minutes a good passing move between Tim Gleed, Tom James and Will Tearle created space for Tim to blast the ball into the net . Bassett redoubled their efforts and for long periods Liden were pressed back into their own half. The equaliser came 10 minutes later as the Liden goalkeeper failed to hold a shot and Tom James slotted the ball home. At this stage Bassett looked the likely winners but Liden showed why they top the League and began to get back in the game. With 10 minutes to go, a Liden shot hit the bar, the resultant shot was blocked brilliantly by Joe, next it was cleared off the line before being toe poked into the net by the only player left on his feet. The home side began to tire in the last 5 minutes allowing Liden to score once more which gave a score line which was not a true reflection of the way the game had gone. The whole squad can take great satisfaction from the fact that they had pushed a very good Liden team all the way with the result in doubt right up to the end.
