Despite some fine saves by Scott Smedley Bassett crash to big defeat

After two wins on the trot, it was a fairly confident coaching team that travelled to Supermarine to play Swindon Eagles on a wet Sunday morning. However, if there is one thing we have learnt over the last 6 years with this team is that their inconsistency is consistent. As that "fine" TV pundit Big Ron Atkinson would say "it was a game of two halves, Brian", the first as disappointing as the second satisfying. It would be best to draw a veil over the first half performance, except to say that but for a number of fine saves from keeper Scott Smedley we would have let in more than the five goals we did. Despite a lot of hard work from most individuals it came to nought by the lack of teamwork.

Second half it all seemed to click, spookily coinciding with the arrival of the club chairman !!! With the same team as the first half, passes were now finding a blue shirt, we even had shots on goal. For the first time in the game the home team were on the back foot. Gareth Jones was unlucky not to score when his Beckham type lob cleared the keeper but was scrambled off the line by the covering defender. With Bassett competing for every ball the Eagles at last knew they were in a game but despite all the away teams efforts the ball refused to find the net. It was Swindon who managed the only goal of the half, catching us on the break with low numbers at the back.

A very frustrating game, where the difference in the performance came down to attitude with the want to win, something that is difficult to coach into a team.
