Bassett go down to Stratton Juniors in their opening league game

A game in which neither team showed their true potential, was won by a Stratton side which had the edge in midfield. The first half began with both sides compressing the play in the centre with no one really getting the ball to the flanks, chances were therefore at a premium. It wasn't until 10 minutes in, that Stratton beat the off side trap but failed to convert the chance. However, a few minutes later the trap was sprung again and the home side took the lead after a break through the middle. The game continued with neither side dominating until a through ball by Wayne Matthews allowed Will Tearle to chip the goalkeeper and level the scores. Just before half time, a quite clearly offside home player slotted the ball home and the Referee pointing to the centre spot to the disbelief of all.

Second half, Stratton stepped up a gear and were the better side. A free header at a corner made the score 3-1 but Bassett kept plugging away and were unlucky not to pull one back from a Tom James volley, brilliantly saved by the home keeper. One goal apiece were then cancelled out by off sides before Bassett went from a flat back 4 to 3 central defenders to hopefully claw themselves back into the game. It was not to be however, and Stratton took all the points.
