Another defeat against Wroughton in a friendly

Bassett Under 12's poor season continued with another heavy defeat due to weak second half showing. Having been the better side for virtually all of the first half and leading 1-0 thanks to a Tom Marchment goal, Bassett threw the game away, firstly conceding two goals just before half time due to poor defending. Both Wroughton's goals came from shots from the edge of the box with Bassett's defence not closing the Wroughton strikers down before they fired their shots on goal. It was irritating that the two goals were scored in the 36th and 38th minutes of the first half when there had been no injuries or time wasting, in a half that should only last 30 minutes.

The second half was a total contrast as the visitors dominated from start to finish. Bassett went further behind within a couple of minutes of the restart as Matt Purse was harshly judged to have handled when the ball was fired at him from two yards and struck his arm. Wroughton's keeper James Moore scored the resulting penalty to put the visitors 3-1 in front. Bassett then allowed the visitors to dictate and in the end could have lost by a lot more but for some excellent saves from Tom Holmes in the Bassett goal. Despite a poor team performance in the second half there were some good individual performances. Dan Strange had a good game marking Wroughton's 6ft striker and David Lazenby and Josh Dimond worked tirelessly throughout the whole match. As for the rest, there was a lack of robustness. Time and time again Wroughton players were able to win the balls that were 75:25 in Bassett's favour and run with the ball through Bassett player after player. Bassett will have to improve quickly if they are to avoid the bottom three in their league and probably need two wins out of their last three games, all of which are against the leading sides in the league.
