Another European triumph

The second match of the Holland Tour saw Bassett meet up against their hosts from Loosduinen. In what turned out to be comfortable victory Bassett were able to afford the luxury of star players Phil Tearle, Jonny Aitkenhead, Josh Dimond and Sean Toomey playing only half a match each. Right from the start Bassett were on top and Tom Marchment had the first chance of the match shooting wide after six minutes. Jonny Aitkenhead then went close to giving Bassett the lead, shooting just over a minute later. Bassett took the lead in the 9th minute through Jonny Aitkenhead, put through by Matt Povey following a good lay-off by Peter Willis. The home side went close to getting back on level terms when their pacey striker shot wide on 12 minutes. Jonny Aitkenhead could have had a first half hat-trick as he was put through only to have shots saved in both the 13th and 14th minutes of the match. Phillip Forster then went close with a powerful shot which went narrowly wide. A further breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Matt Povey found the net following a goalmouth scramble. Bassett's players then started to get greedy in front of goal as the home side lost their shape and Bassett created chance after chance. The score should have been more but the sides turned round with Bassett leading just 2-0.

The introduction of Phil Tearle at half time saw Bassett dominate even more than in the first half. Man of the Match Tom Marchment went close within two minutes of the restart and could have scored another two minutes later but was denied by a good save. In between Phillip Forster also went close. Bassett extended their lead on 36 minutes when Phil Tearle fired an unstoppable shot into the Loosduinen net. Bassett continued to dominate but once again players started to become greedy and shot when fellow team mates were in better positions. Time and time again Bassett opened up the home side, particularly down the left hand side where Stuart Smedley and Tom Marchment were linking up well, only to shoot straight at the keeper. The score remained 3-0 until the closing stages due to Bassett's wastefulness in front of goal but two late strikes from Phil Tearle, a hat-trick having only come on at half time, gave the score line a more accurate reflection of Bassett's domination. The home side had some very skilful players but were let down by a lack of organisation and strength.
