Bassett open season with big win

The Under 12's kicked off their season in style, winning 9-3 at Ballards Ash against Old Town United, a side who had beaten Bassett 5-1 last season. Jonny Aitkenhead helped himself to a hat-trick, with Bassett's man of the match Josh Dimond, also netting twice. Bassett's other goals were scored by Phillip Tearle (2), Dean Wason and Matt Povey, the latter player scoring against his former club in the opening minutes of the match. Bassett were always the dominant side and would have won a lot more comfortably but for a couple of out of character goalkeeping errors by the normally solid Tom Holmes. Some of the passing and movement off the ball was, at times, a joy to watch and the Bassett side seemed to enjoy the wide open spaces at Ballard's Ash. Ryohei Ogata and Michael Weaving made their debuts for Bassett and both showed that they would be capable of fighting for a place this season. With a squad of 18 players hopefully competition for places will lead to a successful season for Bassett.
