Bassett move up to 5th spot

In the end a comfortable win for Wootton Bassett Town against a Greenmeadow side missing a number of key players due to illness. Bassett opened the scoring when Sean Toomey hit a powerful half volley into the Greenmeadow net following a cross from Phillip Tearle. Greenmeadow nearly equalised a couple of minutes later but were denied by an excellent goal line headed clearance from Stuart Smedley. Bassett extended their lead when Tom Marchment scored for the fifth consecutive game. Bassett were now very much on top and went further ahead just before half-time when Jonny Aitkenhead was brought down in the box and Mike Ford scored from the resulting penalty.

Having thrown away a 3-0 lead the previous week, Bassett management felt a touch of déjà vu when Greenmeadow pulled a goal back within a minute of the restart, when Bassett were caught trying to dribble the ball out of defence. However, Bassett seemed to learn the lesson of the previous week's defeat against Stratton and quickly regained control of the midfield and re-established the three-goal lead through Jonny Aitkenhead, his eighth league goal of the season. Two further goals from Phillip Tearle and Tom Marchment, the latter a delightful lob over the Greenmeadow keeper, saw these two players join Jonny Aitkenhead as Bassett's joint top scorers on eight apiece. Greenmeadow never gave up, playing sone delightful passing football at times, and scored a consolation goal from the penalty spot, following a foul by Bassett keeper Craig Munday. A good Bassett performance which moved them up into 5th place in the table.
