Bassett first team to defeat Stratton Youth

Bassett became the first side to defeat league leaders Stratton Youth in the league this season in an excellent game of football. A superb result, which was only tarnished by the behaviour of the Stratton management and some of their parents after the game and this report will concentrate only on the game itself. The first half was very tight with neither side giving anything away. Bassett's defence was superbly marshalled by Mike Ford and David Lazenby and dealt comfortably with most of Stratton's attacks. When they did get through the defence, Tom Holmes made sure the match remained 0-0 at half time.

There was a similar patter to the start of the second half. However, following a long punt by Stratton's 6ft goalkeeper, the ball bounced over the Bassett defence and Henry Bird ran on to put the visitors into the lead. From that moment there was only going to be one winner as Bassett stepped up another gear. The inspiration was Phillip Tearle who played absolutely superbly. It was following an attack down the right that Bassett equalised, substitute Josh Dimond pouncing when the keeper only parried a Phil Tearle shot. Bassett then continued to press forward for the winner and the whole of Bassett must have heard the cheer when Phil Tearle hit a screaming shot into the bottom corner. Never has a result been as sweet as this!
