Bassett do a quick fire double over Wroughton

For the second time in a fortnight Bassett defeated near neighbours Wroughton by the narrowest of margins. Bassett had gone into the match without both Matt Purse and Mike Ford but on arrival at Wroughton took heart from the fact that Wroughton would be without star man Johnny May through injury. Bassett started the game well and had much of the early play and it was no surprise when they went into the lead. Good build up play saw the ball eventually make its way to Sean Toomey who fired an unstoppable shot over James Moore in the Wroughton goal into the back of the net. 1-0 Bassett and deservedly so. Bassett continued to have the better of the play with Sean Toomey and Phillip Tearle linking up well on the right-hand side. Josh Dimond and Johnny Aitkenhead worked tirelessly in midfield to deny the home side any service to their strikers. Midway through the first half Bassett began to lose their way a bit, allowing Jack Hiscock far too much time and space. Luckily for Bassett he had little support from the other Wroughton players. Bassett turned round at half time 1-0 to the good and on the balance of play deserved the lead.

The second half continued in a similar fashion with Bassett creating the better chances. Bassett had a golden opportunity to extend the lead when Philip Forster was brought down in the box for a penalty. Unfortunately for Bassett, a huge divot on the penalty spot resulted in Phillip Tearle miss-hitting his spot kick, which went straight to keeper Moore for an easy save. Wroughton took heart from this and began to create more chances but Johnny Aitkenhead and the Bassett back four managed to keep the home side at bay with some rugged defending. Bassett are certainly becoming a difficult side to score against. Bassett extended their lead through yet another Josh Dimond goal from a goalmouth scramble following a corner. This is the third goal Josh has scored this season; all in similar circumstances, and the relief on the touchline was felt by supporters and management alike. Unfortunately, this was short lived as Jack Hiscock struck an unstoppable long range shot into the top corner of Bassett's net to bring the home side back into the match. This ensured some nervous closing exchanges for the Bassett support and management but, in the end, Bassett held on for another three deserved points. This win lifted Bassett up into third place in the table as a result of Croft's defeat at Stratton.
