Comeback carries Bassett into playoff places at halfway stage

The Meadow, Tuesday 12th November 2024

Royal Wootton Bassett Town came from behind to defeat bottom side Brimscombe and Thrupp 4-2 and climb into the Hellenic League Premier Division playoff places.

The result means Bassett sit in a position where they want to be at the halfway point of the campaign - though they had to work hard for their latest victory.

Bassett trailer at the break as Dan Martin gave the Lilywhites the lead shortly before the interval.

But Ollie Case restored parity shortly after the restart.

Veteran Chris Zebroski then quickly put Bassett ahead before making it 3-1 shortly after the hour.

Chalmers Phin - who recently joined Brimscombe after a very brief spell with Bassett - made it interesting as he converted from the spot with just over ten minutes remaining.

But any nerves Bassett may have been feeling were calmed when Jack Hobson-McVeigh confidently swept home from the spot with time running out.

Bassett now sit on 34 points from 19 games - four fewer than last year when they wound up fourth, though four points more than at the same stage two years ago when Sam Collier's side wound up fifth.

There's a lot of football left to play - and tough games on the horizon, including four of the next five league contests that are all against sides positioned for a playoff run.

But Bassett - who have claimed 26 points from the last available 30 - are where they want to be.

Now the task is to remain on an upward trajectory, make it a hat trick of top five finishes - and have another go at the lottery that is the promotion playoffs.
