Royal Wootton Bassett Town's hopes of another extended run in the Wiltshire Premier Shield were dashed as Sam Collier's side exited at the first round stage following a 4-2 home defeat against Southern League Westbury United.

In a clash of last season's two defeated semi finalists, Bassett were competitive but not ultimately unable to overcome their step four opposition.

Bassett had led through Brad Pagliaroli's goal on the quarter hour mark.

However Joe Beardwell equalised later in the opening half as he headed in from an Ashton Stanley free kick.

Bassett came close to quickly restoring their lead only to be denied by the woodwork meaning the scores were level at the break.

Soon after the restart another set piece led to Westbury's second as Aaron Cockerill headed in from a corner.

Minutes after being denied by a fine save from Westbury 'keeper Rob Brown, Pagliaroli created Bassett's leveller as his corner was guided in by George Peare.

The tie was now finely poised, but Westbury seized the upper hand when Ryan Bole made it 3-2.

Beardwell then completed the scoring when James Foster played a free kick straight to him and the Westbury forward made no mistake when presented with an open goal.
