Unbeaten Run Extends Into Double Figures

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development made it ten games unbeaten with a 4-2, come from behind win against Melksham Town Reserves.

Bassett started the day in seventh place when they entertained Melksham, the side currently bottom of the table. Melksham were already having a difficult week too, having had a change of manager with Craig Kent having departed, being replaced by former Corsham Town and Malmesbury Victoria manager Justin Flowers who had brought some of his former Corsham players to Melksham to strengthen the side.

In an entertaining and sporting contest that saw referee Andy Meaden not needing to use any of his cards, it was Melksham who took the lead on 14 minutes through Matt Caslin.

However, it did not take long for the home side to get back on level terms, Charlie McCrae getting an equaliser within minutes of the Melksham opener.

It remained even throughout the rest of the half and the teams turned round with the game level at 1-1.

Bassett went in front on 53 minutes, leading scorer Kevin Lartey setting up Finley Smith whose powerful shot from the edge of the box beat Melksham keeper Harry Pickering.

Smith doubled the advantage on 65 minutes, smashing in on the half volley after a good team move down the right which saw Harry Walters clear of the defence and teeing up Smith for his strike.

Melksham continued to look to get back in the game and reduced the deficit six minutes from time when Nick Chandler fired in from the edge of the 18-yard box.

However, any hope of getting anything out of the game was extinguished within a minute when Malcolm Cook received a throw-in on the left hand side of the area and turned to smash a shot into the top right-hand corner of the net giving Pickering no chance to make the final score 4-2.
