Development fall to narrow defeat at newly promoted Blunsdon

Tuesday night saw Blunsdon play their first home game of the season at Sutton Park following their promotion to the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League from the Swindon & District League, with last season's champions Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development the visitors.

The heavy rain on the night resulted in a slick pitch, which suited both sides and led to an entertaining game, in which the hosts came from behind to edge a 2-1 victory.

Blunsdon went close to taking the lead early on when a free kick from distance from Eliot Wheatley was well saved by Elliot Clack in the visitors' goal, the 'keeper stopping the first shot and then clearing the rebound before a Blunsdon player could pounce.

Whilst Blunsdon saw a lot of the ball in the first half, it was Bassett who broke the deadlock, Bruno Martins scoring midway through the half with a curling shot from the edge of the box through a body of players, which went into the net off the far post.

Blunsdon got themselves back level on the stroke of half-time, last season's leading scorer Wheatley firing in a stunning strike to make it 1-1 at the break.

Blunsdon came out for the second half looking like a team intent on getting that first win at the higher level, creating a number of good chances but were denied by Clack on several occasions, with the

certainly having a great game for the visitors.

There was to be a winner for the home side though, substitute Jamie Pidgeon getting on the end of a free-kick from Harry Hillerby to head his side in front.

That was to be the end of the night's scoring as Blunsdon recorded that first win in the Premier Division and remain unbeaten after their opening two games.
