Bassett end the season with another draw

Well that's it for another season and what a way to finish, this was always going to be a close contest between two strong teams who like to play good football. But add to this the fact that both teams were exactly level in joint third in the league on the same points, same goal difference and same goals for and against and this was only going to make this contest even better.

The match kicked of and a tentative start by both sides saw P/W having the first few chances until Bassett started to take control and Josh went close with a decent effort which forced the P/W keeper to make a good early save. But then just as it looked as though we were controlling the game P/W committed numbers forward and scored on the break with a well worked goal. At this point I still felt confident as it was Bassett who were pulling all the strings and within five minutes the scores were equal when Reuben, Alex and Scott combined well to send Josh through one on one with the keeper and although the keeper did well to save Josh's first shot he couldn't stop the second and the scores were level. Then a few minutes later Reuben earned Bassett a penalty when he made a great surging run into the area and was brought down. Josh stepped up and struck the ball well but the keeper guessed right and made an excellent save. Even after this the lads remained in confident mood and soon Bassett took the lead, a good long kick from Mitchell forced a corner which was cleared for a throw and from the throw good pressurising in the area lead to Josh getting the final touch to make the score 2-1. Mitchell then made two good saves in the dying minutes of the half to ensure that we remained on top going into the interval.

Straight from the restart Bassett showed they were up for it and Reuben was in dominating mood as he again bossed the midfield. But P/W weren't going to accept defeat easily and it was now time for our defence to be tested and Martin and Tom didn't let anyone down as they defended very well to keep P/W at bay. But ten minutes into the second half and Bassett again conceded from a corner for the second week in a row by not attacking the ball. Despite this set back Mitchell, Tom and Martin did well towards the end as P/W piled on the pressure and in midfield Reuben, Alex and Scott all had a good game with Josh proving a constant threat playing off the shoulder of the last defender and looking for the through balls which were constantly being supplied.

A great season with the lads starting to play some fantastic football, unfortunately at this age power and size seem to win more games than skill and technique, this along with the fact that we didn't have a large enough squad I felt cost us the chance of seriously challenging for the title and the cup.

MOTM – Reuben/Tom

As this was my last match as manager of the team I would like to say big thank you to everyone who has helped me over the last three years and wish the team every success in the future.
