Bassett and Greenmeadow share the points

After not having a League match for 5 weeks today was going to be interesting, could the lads continue to play the excellent flowing football which has become their trademark over the last five or six matches or would they struggle to find their form after such a long lay off?

From the kick off it was Greenmeadow who looked the hungriest with all the early pressure coming from them. But gradually we started to put a few decent passing moves together and exert some pressure of our own. Reuben made a good early clearance to Josh who worked the ball down the line and crossed for Scott but unfortunately the keeper just got to it first to prevent a certain goal. Good work down the right from Max then earned Bassett a free kick which forced the Greenmeadow keeper to make a finger tip save from Scott, who had started the game looking very comfortable in the centre midfield role. At this point Max was starting to have a real influence on the game and was causing Greenmeadow all sorts of problems down the right flank so it was a big blow when he had to be substituted due to injury. But on came Tom, who within minutes proved a good replacement with a shot which was parried out for a corner. Scott and Martin worked it well and when it dropped in the area to Alex, his presence caused GM to handle the ball...Penalty. Josh stepped up and hit the ball low and hard and although the keeper went the right way he couldn′t make the save, 1-0 to Bassett.

For the second half of match the possession was probably 60-40 in favour of Bassett with good efforts on goal from Reuben, Scott, Josh and Alex but the second goal just wouldn′t come and it looked as though the one goal would probably be enough as we didn′t look as though we were going to concede. But then with around three quarters of the match gone an unfortunate deflection in our area gave Greenmeadow the equaliser and although we threw everything at them after this they defended well to deny us the three points.

After such a long lay off we started the match a little bit shaky, but as the game went on we grew in confidence and started to put a few good moves together. But the most pleasing aspect of today′s game was our attitude and commitment which meant we gave as good as we got. In the end I thought we deserved all three points but well done to Greenmeadow who never gave up and pressed us right up to the final whistle. Max was unfortunate with his injury as he had started the game very well and Scott also had a very good first half but it was Reuben, Martin and Tom who were closest to winning this weeks Man of the Match award. But this week it goes to a player who deserves a special mention after another great performance. Alex has done a good job for us this season despite not always starting every match and probably hasn′t had the credit he′s deserved, he is a player who I think has improved a lot as the season has gone on, despite playing up a year and he has worked hard to force his way into the team with a number of good displays.
