Brilliant effort in cup against Lydiard Youth

After last weeks excellent display today was another chance for Bassett to show that they can compete with another one of the better teams. Lydiard were our opponents in the third round of the North Wilts cup and the boys were determined to put on a good performance after playing poorly against this team a few weeks ago.

The plan today was to take the game to Lydiard and not to let them settle and straight from the kick off this happened, both Josh and Reuben had good early shots saved as we slowly started to get the upper hand. This pressure resulted in Bassett taking the lead just before half time when Josh′s shot was followed in well by Scott who scored from the rebound. Then in the last minute of the half Lydiard managed to force a corner which Reuben did well to clear but it landed at the feet of the Lydiard winger who drilled the ball into the back of the net to make the score 1-1 at half time.

At half time we encouraged the lads to keep pressing the Lydiard players and within five minutes we had gone in front for the second time when Reuben made a great tackle in the centre of the pitch, Max picked up the loose ball and ran on to slot it home from just inside the area. At this point Bassett looked in control of the game and were unlucky not to score a third which would have probably finished Lydiard off. But with five minutes to go Lydiard broke forward and equalized with a good shot from the edge of the area. With the game finally balanced it looked as though it was going to go into extra time but then a mistimed tackle in the area resulted in a penalty which the Lydiard winger tucked away to complete his hat-trick. All we could do now was throw everything we had at Lydiard and with only a few minutes left on the clock we pinned them back in their own box but lady luck was again shining on the opposition and we eventually ran out of time.

Another excellent performance today and we can only consider ourselves desperately unlucky not to be in the hat for the third round draw. But the lads have shown a lot of belief in themselves in the last two games and now we have to build on this and try and get some sort of consistency. Again it was a fantastic team effort with everyone playing an important role this being the case the MOTM award again goes to the whole team for a brilliant joint effort.
