Finishes all square against Swindon Soccer Skills

We were looking forward to today′s match as we hadn′t played for 2 weeks and we were up against Swindon Soccer Skills who are another strong team who will be in the main pack chasing for the top spot at the end of the season. With this in mind we made every effort to get the lads fired up after a few recent poor results. The response was fantastic and every single Bassett player seemed to be up for it today.

For the first five minutes of the match it was reasonably even with both sides battling for an early advantage. Bassett it was who started to get on top and before long opened the scoring. Jack made a long clearance which the SSS defence couldn′t deal with and the ball fell to Max who fed Josh, his shot was blocked but Scott was there to finish the move off and make it 1-0 to the home team. SSS then tried their hardest to get back into the game by forcing three corners in a row but with Jack making a good save and then Martin making a fantastic goal line clearance from what seemed to be a certain goal Bassett managed to keep the important one goal advantage. Just before half time Bassett again came on strong and first Scott and then Josh were both unlucky with snap shots which the SSS goal keeper managed to scramble away.

The second half started well for Bassett and it looked as though we might have added to our lead as we took control of the game. But then a long, high clearance from the SSS defence was met by Martin who showed no fear and a lot of commitment by putting his head where a lot of players wouldn′t have, but unfortunately for Bassett the ball deflected behind him and over Jack into the back of the net. In previous weeks this would have seen our players drop their heads but today was different, after a long chat before the game about attitude and commitment this set back only seemed to make us stronger and in the last ten minutes the SSS keeper had to work hard to stop Bassett from taking all 3 points.

A fantastic display of teamwork from every player today, Jack was brave again today and made some important saves, Mitchell and Martin looked very comfortable at the back and this was probably their best joint performance of the season, in midfield Scott, Reuben and Max got through a lot of hard work and totally dominated the midfield area, up front Josh held the ball up well and went close with a couple of chances and with Tom and Alex doing well after coming on as second half substitutes this was another excellent all round performance. After today′s match we have proved that we can compete with any team and if we can carry this sort of belief forward then hopefully we can get back to winning ways.
