Perfect result in perfect conditions

The conditions were perfect today for our game against a confident Ferndale Rodbourne side who have scored a lot of goals recently, so again we were looking at another tough match.

After two good performances in the last two weeks Wootton Bassett needed to start today′s match with the same grit and determination, but unfortunately we didn′t and with only six minutes on the clock we found ourselves two goals down. It was only then that we started to play and Alex was the first player to test the Ferndale keeper with a good left foot shot. Then with ten minutes gone Jack sent Max racing away down the right but his cross was cut out by the Ferndale defender who thought he had time but Josh was on to him and robbed him, before turning and an firing his shot passed the advancing keeper to start the comeback. Then with half time approaching Alex and Max combined well only to see Max′s shot whiz agonisingly wide. Minutes later Max again went close after making one of his trademark runs down the right beating three players before unleashing another low drive which again was just off target. This was much better football from Bassett and we now looked as though we meant business.

Ferndale kicked off the second half and straight away Bassett started to pressurise which created a couple of early chances for Tom and Alex. Then came our equalizer, good combination play from Alex and Tom resulted in Tom scoring his first goal of the season from close range. Now Bassett looked the stronger of the two sides and minutes later Reuben made a great interception in the centre of midfield before running on to unleash an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner to also register his first of the season and to make the score 3-2 to Bassett at the final whistle.

Today we made a bad start and put ourselves under needless pressure, but the way we dug ourselves out of it was good and we finished with the result we deserved. What we needed was some inspiration and someone to lift the team and today that person was again Reuben. His tough tackling and intelligent play was great to watch and when he′s playing like he is at the moment the rest of the players seem to lift their games too.
