Win built on impressive defensive display

It was a trip down the road to our local rivals Wroughton for today′s league match and in the past this has always proved to be one of the toughest fixtures of the season. So despite the fact that Wroughton are currently rooted to the bottom of the League table we expected today′s match was going to be a real battle and after climbing back towards the top of the table in recent weeks we knew we had to keep our good run going.

Bassett kicked off and straight away went on the attack with Max having a good shot parried out only as far as Josh whose follow up shot rattled the post. This was followed by a good exchange between Reuben and Max, who eventually fed Alex and he tested the Wroughton keeper for the second time in a minute. At this point we needed to score to ease the nerves as our players weren′t playing the ball around as well as we knew we could and Wroughton were looking quite dangerous on the break. So when Max tucked away a neat shot into the bottom corner after good work from Reuben we felt this would encourage the lads to play better football. From the restart Wroughton tried to come straight back but thankfully Mitchell was alert and kept us in front with a good save. Then came our second when Reuben won the ball in midfield and fed Alex who played the ball to Josh and then continued his run, before taking the return pass and finishing convincingly. Minutes later it was Alex again who scored after receiving a great pass from Reuben and now Bassett were really making the ball do the work with some lovely passing and moving. It was all Bassett now and Reuben was unlucky after winning the ball in his own penalty area and running the full length of the pitch before hitting his shot just wide and Alex, Josh and Tom all had chances saved before Josh made it 4-0 just before half time after following up a shot from Scott.

We started the second half as we had finished the first and soon it was 5-0 as Josh finished off a good move involving Tom and Max, but then as so often happens when teams get well in front, everyone wants to score and we lost our shape a bit which allowed Wroughton a few half chances which luckily for us they didn′t take advantage of.

A good first half display and a decent second half with some good football played in patches. Defensively we played well with Mitchell, Jack, Martin and Tom all putting in good performances and attacking wise with Reuben, Scott, Alex, Max and Josh we continue to look dangerous when in possession. Again any one of our nine players were in the running for the MOTM award but today it goes to Martin who showed his strengths with some important tackling good support play and excellent heading.
