Second consecutive draw for Under 9A's

Highworth Town were our opponents today for our penultimate fixture of the season and we were looking to end our season playing the attractive flowing football which our players and parents have been become accustomed to over the last nine months.

Bassett started the match strongly and soon got into a good rhythm of passing and creating space which meant for the first ten minutes Highworth couldn't get hold of the ball. Good combination play between Scott and Reuben created our first chance which Reuben hit just wide and minutes later Scott saw his shot saved. Then against the run of play HT scored the first goal, a long ball over the top allowed their striker to get behind our defence and run onto the ball to finish well. This didn't dampen our spirits and we came back fighting with Reuben playing a neat ball out to Josh on the right wing, he looked up and whipped in a first time cross towards Alex who had made a great forward burst and although the keeper got his hand to the shot he couldn't prevent the ball crossing the line. Bassett really started to pile the pressure on now and were unlucky not to go into half time with a lead after Josh, Martin and Reuben all went close after a succession of corners.

Early in the second half we were reminded just how threatening HT were from set pieces when they went close with a few corners but we managed to scramble the ball away and then hit them on the counter attack. Bassett were again looking like the most likely team to score and Scott went close with two great efforts, whilst Alex was unlucky to see his header whiz across the face of the goal before being cleared. In the dying minutes the game could have gone either way as both sides went all out for the winning goal but the game finally finished HT1- WBTFC1.

Again the result didn't match the performance but today's display was probably one of our best all season, some of the football played was breathtaking and the lads should be very pleased with their performance. Mitchell again made vital saves and again his distribution was excellent, Tom and Martin were outstanding in defence and covered each other very well, our midfield quartet of Scott, Reuben and Alex played some of the best passing and movement I've seen all season and also recovered well when we were under pressure and up front Josh went close on a few occasions and was unlucky not to score. The contenders for the MOTM award were Tom, Martin, Reuben and Alex but they were all just pipped to the post by Scott who was back to his best today with a good all action performance.
