Despite some great football Bassett go down against Ferndale Rodbourne

How do you get your players to play such fantastic football? The way your kids pass and move the ball is excellent; your lads must spend a lot of time on set pieces. These are just a few of the comments I received from the opposition′s managers during today′s game against Ferndale Rodbourne.

Yet for the second week in a row we were beaten 4-1 and have probably blown the chance of challenging for the league title. But the last three or four weeks have seen our team produce some of the best football we have ever played and for this reason Dave and I are quite happy to relinquish our title ambitions as we are now consistently producing the kind of football which we have been working towards for the last three years. It′s true that sometimes playing this style of quick tempo, one touch football doesn′t always get results as at this age players can easily get overpowered by bigger, stronger players and kicking the ball as far up the field and chasing it would probably get more results but this isn′t the way football should be played. So we will stick to what we are doing and we won′t be changing our style in the search for immediate success as we have always believed that the football which these players are being encouraged to play at the moment is the football they will play for life and we firmly believe that we are still on the right tracks with what we are doing and that the results will follow.

The match itself started fairly evenly with chances at both ends but Ferndale managed to take their chances and we consistently made the wrong decisions in the final third, taking players on when we should have passed it and visa versa, hence we didn′t seem to get that final pass into the danger area as often as we should have. But all in all the lads were fantastic and again produced a first half performance which the opposition were totally in awe of so we can only continue to encourage everything that the players are doing at the moment. Again the MOTM award was very fiercely contested but the three players who were closest to winning this week were Scott, who is playing some good football at the moment and Reuben who again worked tirelessly in midfield and scored an excellent 20 yard drive, but the winner was Mitchell who just seems to get better and better every week, not only did he make a number of outstanding saves but again his distribution was first class.

Finally I would like to add one last word to all of our players and parents and that is please be patient as despite the poor results all we have been getting recently from everyone who has watched our games has been very positive comments which only confirms that we are still going in the right direction and if we all stick together our players will come out of this playing a good standard of football which will stay with them for life.
