Under 12 Blues lose despite determined comeback

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 12 Blue played another game in strong winds and once again lost by a narrow margin, this time away to Malmesbury Youth.

Bassett made a slow start the game and, playing into the wind, they conceded the majority of possession in the first half but restricted Malmesbury to few chances. A spectacular one-handed Tom Davis save looked to have led to half time stalemate before a late Malmesbury goal gave the hosts a narrow lead.

Early in the second half with the wind and a stern team talk behind them, Bassett gave a much improved performance. A spell of pressure resulted in a series of corners, as the ball was played into the box the ever alert Jake Webster pounced to fire in the equaliser with a spectacular close range volley.

Bassett pushed for an equaliser and began to dominate possession. It was therefore against the run of play that Malmesbury took the lead with a terrific turn and volley from range that gave the keeper no chance.

Bassett thought they had the equaliser with a Thomas Nicholls strike that was narrowly disallowed for offside. A series of strikes from distance tested the Malmesbury keeper but the equaliser was not to come. Malmesbury put the game beyond doubt with a late effort to make the final score 3-1.
