Blues suffer narrow league defeat against high-flying Giants

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 12 Blue lost away to highly-rated Swindon Supermarine Giants in a five-goal thriller at the Webbswood Stadium.

Few expected Bassett to have much chance away to one of the standout teams in the division. However, after leading twice an excellent performance ended with a narrow 3-2 defeat.

After sustaining early pressure, Wootton Bassett shocked Supermarine to take an early lead. Finlay Hide picked up the ball 20 years from goal before unleashing a 20 yard wonder-strike to give the keeper no-chance. Tom Nicholls nearly doubled the lead shortly after with a cracking right footed effort from distance that went just over.

Tom Davis kept Wootton Bassett in the game with a series of smart stops before Supermarine were able to equalise with a close range header. Edward Greenouff gave Wootton Bassett the lead shortly before half time with a trademark right-footed shot from distance that beat the keeper to his left.

Wootton Bassett were denied an opportunity to extend their lead after Sam Smith was seemingly upended in the Supermarine penalty area, only to see the referee wave away the claim.

Supermarine equalised midway through the second half after a mix up in the Wootton Bassett defence and took the lead late-on with a long range effort.

It was a disappointing end to a game where Wootton Bassett more than matched their opponents for long spells and scored two excellent goals.

Next up the team are home to Hungerford Town Juniors Black
