Magnificent seven sends Ladies into County Cup final

Royal Wootton Bassett Town booked a place in the Wiltshire County Women's Cup final with a resounding 7-0 win against league rivals Swindon Spitfires.

Hayley Huckin was the star of the semi final show for Bassett as she netted six of her side's goals, including two strikes in what had been a closely fought opening period.

Her first came after just three minutes as she raced onto Lisa Matthews' long ball before racing past the last Spitfires defender and coolly slotting past the 'keeper.

It took until five minutes before the break for Huckin to double her team's lead. Laura Jefferies played a free kick out wide to Laura Gammon, whose cross into the box picked out Huckin. The forward then sidestepped the 'keeper before finishing from close range.

That goal proved decisive as Bassett took full control following the restart.

A Jefferies free kick from 25 yards out extended their lead in the 48th minute. The set-piece specialist was then provider for the fourth, swinging in a corner which Huckin headed in at the far post.

The fifth arrived shortly after the hour with Huckin taking advantage of a defensive mix-up and finishing into the far corner from the edge of the area.

Huckin had scored five in a league encounter against Frome Town Ladies earlier in the season, and her 64th minute strike - the culmination of a fine solo run from halfway - matched that total.

There was still more to come though. With ten minutes to go Huckin went on another lengthy jaunt, which seemed to have come to an end when she stumbled in the box. However, she was able to get a toe on the ball to pass out to Maddy Elliott on the wing. Elliott then swung in a cross, which Huckin met with a firm volley into the top corner to complete her double hat-trick.

The win ensured Bassett a first final berth since the 2013-14 campaign when they were defeated by Swindon Town.

They will meet either fellow South West Women's League Eastern Division title contenders Swindon Town Development or Wiltshire County Women's League leaders Trowbridge Town in the showpiece, which is set to take place on Sunday 15th April at Melksham Town's Oakfield Stadium.

Having earned a league runners-up finish and cup title last season, the County Cup could be the first of another outstanding double for the Ladies. Still atop the league, they will be hoping to get their hands on two pieces of silverware too.
