23 Jan 2011 - Swindon Spitfires (H)

A chill wind in the afternoon could not cool the two teams from giving us an exciting match. Wootton Bassett's newest recruit Victoria Rawlings kicked the first goal about 7 minutes into the match. However, as is the nature with the robust players of Swindon Spitfires they soon equalised two minutes later. The pressure then remained at Wootton Bassett's goal end and Shannon Furey, Felicity Talbot and Hannah Townsend worked hard and well together in defence. Wootton Bassett's midfield seemed to be slightly sluggish at the beginning of the match, as Swindon Spitfires seemed quicker to the ball. Then Swindon Spitfires scored again in the 14th minute, thus taking them ahead. Spurred on by this Wootton Bassett's midfield gained more energy and Chloe Willis scored two minutes after, thus levelling the game. Victoria Rawlings, soon after, scored another goal to put Wootton Bassett ahead at half-time.

Half-Time Score: Wootton Bassett: 3 Swindon Spitfires: 2

The second-half opened and it could be anybody's game. In the 9th minute Victoria Rawlings again scored for Wootton Bassett. In midfield, all the Wootton Bassett girls continued to work hard and that paid off with some more good goal attempts. Despite stiff opposition Wootton Bassett's defence still held and there were some lovely saves by Shannon Furey and good teamwork between Felicity Talbot and Hannah Townsend. Then, to hopefully to seal a win, Victoria Rawlings managed to score another goal in the 16th minute into half-time. After that Swindon Spitfires' goalie was replaced, as she retired with a troubling shoulder injury. As always, it is best never to underestimate the Swindon Spitfires and they battled on and in the 28th minute scored a much needed goal. The supporters, both sides, held their breath to see if Wootton Bassett would falter. However, time did run out for the Swindon Spitfires and at the final whistle Wootton Bassett managed a very rare win against their friendly rivals Swindon Spitfires. All the Wootton Bassett girls have shown dedication in turning up, even if not feeling quite 100% and all that hard work over the years is starting to bear fruit. It would be great to see the team continue to go from strength to strength and give as good a game next Sunday against League Leaders, Trowbridge Town.
