02 Oct 2010 - Larkhall Athletic (A)

In recognition that this was the first time Wootton Bassett had played the new addition to their League, Larkhall Athletic, in a League game, the sun shone throughout the match. Larkhall were quick on gaining the upper hand with a few of their good players, which resulted in their goal 6 minutes into the match. However, three minutes later, Shannon Furey now in mid-field, managed to take a long shot from the pitch's side and unexpectedly scored her first goal of the season. The teams battled on but despite a few goal attempts Bassett did not manage to score again in the first half. Luckily, Felicity Talbot's and Amiee Menzies' defence work, with some lovely saves by Katie Rea in goal, did manage to prevent Larkhall scoring, so the first-half ended in a 1 all draw, with the upperhand for Larkhall, who were slightly better organised at using their skilled players.

The second-half saw Larkhall score in the first 3 minutes, which actually made Bassett pressurise Larkhall's goal but again nothing came of it. After 19 minutes Larkhall scored again and Bassett looked like they were losing and their game became more ragged, with some unco-ordinated kicking. Then, finally, after a few flowing quick release manoeuvres, all the previous hard work from Shannon Furey, Chloe Willis and Amy Mathews, resulted in Jaye Mcguigan scoring in the 28th minute of the game. Although minutes were rapidly running out, even with the addition of injury time, Bassett were firing on all cylinders and Ellie Kaye, who had been a key mid-field player, finally realised her well-deserved goal in the 30th minute! So the game ended with a well deserved 3 all draw.
