09 Jan 2011 - Lavington Juniors (H)

The game was slightly delayed as the previous game on the pitch had not ended. Eventually we kicked off 30 minutes later than scheduled, at 2.30pm.

The weather remained sunny and this time the sun seemed to shine on Wootton Bassett. Wootton Bassett stayed in formation, passed the ball well amongst our mid-field players and I could actually see some regular good partnerships coming. This play was rewarded with well-deserved goals. Everyone was able to benefit from the eveness of play and so Chloe Willis, Rachel Buchanan, Hannah Townsend, Ellie Kaye, Amy Mathews and Katie Rea all scored and some of them even got hat-tricks. Felicity Talbot and Aimee Menzies and Shannon Furey, in goal, were still good in defence and although they might have been less pressurised than usual, they stayed alert to the breaks that sometimes happened from the goal kicks.

In the second-half, despite the lack of goals from Lavington, they kept their heads up and even their Goal Keeper pluckily took the ball down the field to test our defences. Bassett still kept the goals coming and through the onslaught of goals the Lavington Goal Keeper made some superb saves. Sometimes Bassett could do with less fumbling at the goal mouth, although for this game it was of no consequence, however we need to watch this in future games against more experienced teams, when every goal attempt might be more crucial.

Suffice it to say that Wootton Bassett won by a record (for Bassett) margin, however we must hand it to Lavington who came and gave us a match and if they continue to be determined and keep motivated they will go places. I just hope Wootton Bassett play like this again next match, against Larkhall Athletic, next Saturday morning.
