Basset beaten by Spitfires in final league game of the season

Our last league game of the season awaits us and 3 important points were desperately needed to keep us as high up the table as possible as we conclude the end of this busy 06/07 season.

This game wasn't going to be the easiest of games and the girls now seem tired, much reassurance was needed from everyone that we all had to be strong and deliver the best possible game they could offer at our home ground at Ballards Ash.

An even start came from both teams forcing early attacks. Gradually the Spits start to exert that extra pressure, but Gabby defends well and persisting in her role as 1st line defender, she works hard and to her hearts content causes more than problems for them to get close to goal. In every attempt Gabby was able to destroy any forthcoming attacks, so their only chance was to start high long range shots which causes Ellie to keep her keen eye about her with their first attempt bouncing back off the cross bar.

The home team start to get more into the game now that the Opposition seem to be grabbing most of the limelight, eventually Julia gets through with a break on goal, but the ball falls to her left foot and the shot is easily picked up by the goalkeeper.

The game continues to be closely fought with both sides contesting the midfield strongly. Spitfires attack with another long range effort that dips just under the crossbar to score the opening goal. WBTFC come back stronger, but struggle to force any openings, Spitfires defend well and hold onto their goal to the half time mark.

The fresh legs of Evie Reynolds replaces Aimee to start the second half in Midfield. WBTFC start to get on top and force an early corner. They continue to play well, the midfield continue to have their work cut out as they stay back to cover the Spitfires who always look strong on the break, this then inevitably leaves Julia to attack on her own, which they respond to and close down immediately . The defence stays strong with Felicity & Gabby covering well and Ellie looking confident in goal.

Despite some more corners for the home team, any clear chances that continue remain fruitless with only a half chance for Julia who shoots just wide. The midfield, particularly Molly and Amy keep battling away and Julia kept running hard on her own up front. Despite forcing a lot of pressure the game ends in an unlucky defeat for WBTFC who more than matched their highly placed opponents.

FULL TIME - WBTFC 0 Swindon Spitfires 1

Player of the match - Julia

Today's game showed much commitment from the team, but no matter how much work and effort the girls could put into the game, the good teamwork and strong skilled play from the opposition were ready to take over and snatch our every opportunity. Such an improved game compared to last year where we walked away with a 6-3 defeat – an enjoyable game to watch even on that basis!
