Bassett shot down by Spitfires

Today's game sees 2 evenly matched teams back together, we ventured out to a different away ground at South Marston Rec. Last season the game finished on a draw, so the squad knew today's game needed 100% from everyone on the team.

The game started with both teams forcing early attacks. Gradually Spitfires start to get on top, but against the run of play Bassett break and get a penalty following a handball. Julia strikes the penalty well, but close to the Spitfires goalkeeper who blocks and the rebound is scrambled away. Spitfires increase the pressure and eventually score the opening goal with a close range shot. The team continue to battle hard, with good defensive work by Gabby & Felicity, although Spitfires having already scored the 1st goal they continue to dominate the rest of the half. Minutes before the half time whistle their continued game play pays off with another attack leading to the 2nd goal for the opposition.

2-0 down and half time sees WBTFC make a few changes, Julia now as striker and Millie going in defence. Almost straight away Bassett break strongly down the left with Julia cutting in and scoring a well stuck shot from just inside the area.

Spitfires bounced back strongly putting on more pressure. Although Ellie continues to perform well, the pressure eventually tells with another hard powerful shot from short range. This followed by another strike when a shot from distance bounces up nastily and unluckily beats Ellie.

Felicity is challenged strongly in her own area and falls on the ball to give away an unlucky penalty that is hit wide by the Spitfires captain who otherwise had an excellent game. A few minutes later a cross-shot from distance goes in to give Spitfires their 5th goal. As Felicity & Gabby are re-united at the back, WBTFC counter attack strongly down the right with a good run by Julia whose cross beats the Spitfires' goalkeeper and Rebecca forces home a goal from short range. Against the run of play Spitfires score their 6th from short range. WBTFC come back strongly and Julia scores following a good break with the ball just trickling over the line.

An excellent jam packed game from both sides, where both teams fought on to the bitter end, unfortunately for us, Spitfires on the day were the stronger team and therefore deserve the 3 points, but WBTFC played their part with some brave defending, particularly from Ellie, and some good counter attacks in the second half.

Man of the Match (nominated by one parent) – Ellie Kaye – For her continued hard work as the new goalkeeper for the team.
