All square with Chippenham in cup semi final rehearsal

Despite the blustery wind and plunging temperatures we return the away fixture and travel to the home ground of Chippenham Town at Stanley Park, Chippenham. It was going to be a tough match today, with our home game end of last year resulting in a 1-0 win to us.

Chippenham applied the pressure early, which Bassett did well to repel. As usual Felicity and Gabby were rocks at the back. Felicity cleverly broke up a Chippenham raid and sprinted up the wing, before she was eventually closed down by the opposition.

Molly dealt with the midfield play most of the 1st half with quality passes to Julia, who was unlucky not to score early on.

We us now piling on the pressure and Chippenham dealing with this best they could - it was only a matter of time before we were allowed to open up the game.

Evie, who along with Amy are really starting to make the flanks in midfield their own, threaded through a glorious ball to Julia who was unfortunate to see the ball smothered by the goalie. Further attempts by Julia and the midfield were made, but none were able to reach the back of the net. The half time whistle blew with a even score of 0-0 to start the 2nd half with.

Bassett were soon pushed back and not for the last time this season were glad of the cool interception of Felicity. Gabby making one of numerous runs across the pitch to take a throw-in found Amy on the wide left whose shot was just wide.

Evie again performed good work and passed the ball to Gabby who battled well before crossing to Molly whose blocked shot rebounded to Amy who drove a powerful reply over the bar. Today's game showed us that all the girls were prepared to have a go on goal - which is encouraging.

Bassett's pressure had to pay off and eventually it did. Julia broke free and it took the whole of Chippenham's defence to stop her, the ball rebounded out to Molly who's lob looked to be floating just wide when Amy Matthews appeared from nowhere and calmly slotted the ball slowly into the corner of the net.

With only a few minutes before the ref was due to blow the final whistle, a penalty was awarded to Chippenham Town for what the referee believed to have been a hand ball by Gabby, but in fact it rebounded of her chest. Chippenham scored from the spot and the ref blew for fulltime. It was such a shame for the girls as it was the only way Chippenham were going to score past Ellie who has been superb in goal all season.

FULL TIME: 1-1

However, those present know that on Sunday a superb game was played, a rock solid defence has now been supplemented by an exciting and powerful midfield to complement Julia upfront. It will take more than Chippenham to stop it come the semi-final which is due to played in a couple weeks time when we play this team once more.
