Much improved performance still ends in heavy defeat

A much improved performance from Bassett means that the score did not reflect the true end to end nature of the game. A slow start resulted in Old Town taking command of the game and punishing Bassett at almost every opportunity.

At 5-0 the home team suddenly came alive and started to put the visitors under real pressure, with the same slick passing football that Bassett were admired for last season, forcing some good saves for the Old Town keeper.

The second half saw Bassett continue the good football but with added fight and spirit. An extremely solid performance from the back four and keeper, allowed the creative midfield to gain the upper hand and play some wonderful balls to the front two. Bassett were again denied the reward they deserved by an outstanding Old Town keeper and horrendous bad luck that saw a blistering shot from Aiden Cressey smash off the underside of the bar. Bassett's only goal was a superbly taken effort by Anthony Matthews.

An encouraging performance from Wootton Bassett bodes well that fortunes may improve for the rest of the season.
