Rampant Bassett take victory

This was a fantastic game to watch, well from a Bassett view point any way, Bassett completely out played "destroyed" Lydiard Youth in all areas which makes up for the last two games where, to be honest, we lost due to poor away referees decisions. This is our last game of the season and something to prove….and, boy oh boy, did they prove it.

From the off Bassett were at Lydiard chasing every ball, Lydiard could not contain the pressure and started making mistakes, as their passing went astray. Bassett's passing game was on top form as Jack passed to Josh, who laid off a great ball to Tyler, but Tyler just could not find the target. Then Lydiard counter attacked, which gave them an opportunity to shoot which was saved by Joe. Again Josh was involved and played a pass to Sam who shot, the shot was punched out, and the rebound was knocked in by Callum. Bassett one up with only five minutes played. Again Bassett were on the attack and Tyler worked some space and managed to get the shot away, this hit the post! The game was now being played in the Lydiard half. When Lydiard did break both Jack and Scott were solid in defence adsorbing the attacks, and more importantly, nine times out of ten would pass the ball back to a Bassett forward after the tackle or block had been made. Callum ran down the left after playing a perfect ball to Sam, this opened a gap in the Lydiard defence allowing Tyler to find space to crack the ball into the back of the Lydiard net for Bassett's second. Again and Again Bassett attacked, Tyler hit a shot at distance forcing the Lydiard keeper to push the ball around his post. Callum was strong on the left and on many occasions crossed the ball towards the centre spot, but the crosses could not be converted. Again Bassett were placing pressure on Lydiard, the ball was cleared by their defenders high into the air allowing a game of head tennis to begin, I counted seven headers before the ball fell for Josh who had a shot at goal, but it was saved. Then the goal of the season, the ball was in the air, Tyler hit an overhead kick the ball looped into the air and into the back of the Lydiard goal, a fantastic piece of individual skill. Bassett are now three up and half time approaching.

The second half was very much like the first with Bassett taking control and not giving any room to Lydiard to play. But then Lydiard put together their best move of the day opening up Bassett's defence then the shot, the ball bounced over the hands of Joe and went in. Not the start that Bassett wanted. Were Lydiard on their way back? Not at all as within five minutes of Lydiard scoring Bassett hit back with a great pass from Jack to Tyler who cracked the ball into the back of the Lydiard net. Bassett are now 4-1 up. Oliver was on for Jack soon found himself in the action, as he made two very important blocks in front of Joe`s goal. Sam played well in midfield distributing the ball well to the left and right wings, on more than one occasion made the perfect pass to Callum, Tyler and Oliver. Lydiard did come close to scoring for a second time but either Joe saved the shot or Scott, Jack or Oliver blocked the shots. Tyler broke down the left and passed the ball to Oliver who had a shot on goal, which was saved. Then the icing on the cake, Sam took a corner which was driven low across the ground, with spin, the ball was not blocked and found itself, somehow, into the back of the Lydiard net. Full time and Bassett take the win, 5-1.

What a way to end the season, fantastic. A great team effort, it was a shame that Ben could not make the game, we all look forward to the new 11 aside game next session.
