Ferndale step up a gear to beat Bassett

Firstly I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year.

The game started on an even keel with both sides testing each other out. Then Ferndale went up a gear and Bassett could not respond. Ferndale made a break down their left placing both Jack and Oliver under pressure, a long shot towards Joe′s goal was cleared with some passion towards the halfway line. Ferndale ran through our midfield which gave a chance at goal, the shot was blocked by Scott, which was deflected back to Ferndale, a second shot was blocked by Oliver. Ferndale were on top now which set the tone of the match. Bassett struggled to clear their lines and the ball was just held on the line by Joe, which the referee determined had not crossed the line, but I thought it did….

Ben found some space down the right with some good link play with Sam which was balanced with Scott and Callum linking on the left. Bassett again broke down the right with Ben driving for the goal line, but all Bassett could manage was a corner. The corner was taken with a great swinging ball, but cleared by Ferndale who hit Bassett on the counter attack down their left. Bassett′s defence of Jack, Oliver and Scott were all beaten by the break, Joe found him self one on one and went down for save, a good pass by the Ferndale forward beat Joe leaving a tap in for the second Ferndale forward. Bassett were down 1-0.

Callum had a break down the left found space for the cross which just could not be converted by Sam, Bassett′s passing game was two feet short, and not on target all in all looking very rusty. Ferndale broke down the middle almost one on one with Joe when Jack made a perfect tackle clearing the ball out for a corner. The corner was taken and cleared by Bassett just to leave room for the shot, which skipped in underneath Joe′s body for Ferndale′s second. Halftime 2-0 to Ferndale.

The second half started with a formation change, Bassett were now playing two at the back and not the normal three, Bassett did not have time to adjust before Ferndale scored their third, a good strike finding the top of Joe′s goal. As with the first half Bassett were not on the pace for most of the time, and even the 50-50′s were going Ferndale′s way. Callum found some space down the left but the shot was wide of the Ferndale′s goal. Consistent pressure by Ferndale was pushing Bassett back all the time and you could see room for the forth goal and it came. Bassett unable to clear from their goal area which allowed Ferndale the space for the shot which hit the back of Bassett′s goal. 4-0 to Ferndale. In response Bassett changed their formation a second time, playing one at the back…..Joe made some good saves but Bassett could not find a way through the defence of Ferndale Josh had a shot but it was just wide, Callum found some space and shot but over the top of the cross bar. Tyler also was asked to push forward placing pressure on Ferndale but he could not find the time to make the space to have a shot on goal. Final score 4-0 to Ferndale.

To date Bassett have been playing fantastic football, I guess it had to come to an end and today it did. On the positive side there is a lot to work on in training and we know we can play a lot better than we did today. Time to move on and look forward to next week′s game.
