Bassett down to 5 “but hung onto Victory”

Both teams held a one minute silence in respect of George Best.

I have been watching our team grow through the years, since my son, Scott, was five and half years old, I have never seen a game like Sunday′s, the true grit shown from all of Bassett′s players was just stunning and a credit to WBTFC.

The game started with Wroughton placing some pressure on Bassett forcing Joe to make an early save or two. The game was very even for the first ten minutes or so then Bassett went up a gear as their passing game started to take shape. Callum found some space down the left and made some space and supplied the perfect cross, Sam was unlucky and pushed the shot just wide. Bassett were on top, passing the ball back to the defence of Jack, Scott and Oliver who for the first time linking up superbly with the forwards. Sam drove down the middle using his ball skills to make a space for the shot which was just wide. Bassett were pushing forward as a unit supporting each other and battling for each ball it was fantastic to watch. Jack found Tyler, who found Ben on the right, Ben drove forward leaving the Wroughton defender standing, made the cross, Wroughton cleared their lines only to find Scott who thumped the ball just over the cross bar. Every attack that Wroughton attempted was dealt with by Jack, Scott and Oliver they just looked so solid with their supporting work and reading of the game it would have taken a tank to break through the wall they had created.

There was no way that Wroughton would be able to keep Bassett at bay for long, a move like all the others, started at that back, the one two′s and link play which took place made your hair on the back of your neck stand up. Then the gaol, a shot at distance by Sam, skipped underneath the goalie on the wet grass and Bassett took the lead. Wroughton then came back at Bassett with a long shot but typically Joe had this covered, the pressure was on a little as Wroughton found their passing game for the first time of the game, again a second long shot at Bassett′s goal and again Joe saves. Bassett broke down the right with Ben pushing hard down the wing, Ben crosses finds Callum who shoots and finds the back of the net, Bassett are now two up and very much in control. Half time 0-2 to Bassett

In the second half Wroughton put the squeeze on Bassett, Bassett started to defend deeply allowing the shot, which was just wide. Bassett found their feet again and started passing the ball around from Jack to Sam to Ben back to Jack then Callum the quality of the football was just brilliant as they carved through midfield. Wroughton counter attacked and forced the corner, Bassett cleared the corner, but not far enough, the shot came, and with a wicked deflection found the back of Bassett′s net. Wroughton were on they way back.

After the re start Wroughton again found space for the long shot, which was saved by Joe. Wroughton had a shot from distance which was going in under Joe′s cross bar Joe tipped the ball over the top but took the goal with him, finding himself in the back of the net with Scott and the cross bar on his head! Joe was hurt and came off. Tyler was asked to take over the goal keeping duties which he did with great success. A good goal kick was followed up by Callum down the left, the Wroughton defender cleared with pace, which hit Callum in the side of his head (like father like son!) Callum picked himself up and continued. The pace of the game was starting to tell as both sides started to look a little tied. Wroughton won a corner which was taken very well finding the head of their striker who just missed Bassets cross bar. Sam was now off with what looked like a touch of cramp, Bassett were now down to six and need to work very hard for the last ten minutes. Then Callum was hit also by cramp, Bassett were now down to five with five minutes remaining. Wroughton pushed on, nearly breaking our defence on three occasions but again Bassett were strong enough find the time for Ben to run down the right wing and Scott running down the middle ready for the pass. Wroughton found themselves one on one against Tyler but pushed the shot wide. The final score 1-2 to Bassett.

I don′t usually pick players out in games as it′s a team game. But Jack and Scott played out of their skins today with some stunning play supported by Oliver. This game was just brilliant to watch with every team member working so hard. Well done lads.
