Second half goal fest sees Bassett win the match

A mix up with the team colours delayed the start of a very entertaining game on a very cold afternoon. When the game finally started, Wootton Bassett shot from the starting blocks and James Tasker, who scored 7 last week, latched on to a through ball from Joel Swann to make it 0-1 after just two minutes. Craig Mooney and Alfie Passingham combined to go close but at the other end some desperate defending by George Bartlett, Leigh Little and Nicholas Southern was required as they were struggling against a spirited Old Town attack with Jamie Wakefield making two good saves. Good passing between Martyn Plaistow, Swann and Mooney sent Tasker through, only to have his shot well saved and Mooney was unable to capitalise on the loose ball from the rebound and put it just wide but followed this up with an attack of his own that resulted in the ball clipping the cross bar and going over. The score was then 1-1 minutes later when Old Town broke through leaving Wakefield no chance. Half Time 1-1.

After a good talking to at half time, Wootton Bassett started to play their passing game and Passingham and Tasker both had shots saved before they went 1-2 up due to excellent passing between Tasker and Swann, which left Mooney only to tap the ball home. The third goal followed when Plaistow broke down the left hand side and his cross was met by Swann who swept the ball home across the line. Poor defending, by the usually sure Wootton Bassett defence, gifted Old Town their second and their third came when Sam Jackson gave away a free kick on the edge of the box, that was driven into the top corner leaving Wakefield no chance. 3-3. Jackson made amends by cracking home a shot from outside the box after a good run from Jordan Daley to make it 3-4. From the restart Old Town attacked but a good clearance by Bartlett sent through the ball to Mooney who turned one player before chipping the keeper to make it 3-5. Wootton Bassett then made two changes with David Rayner replacing Plaistow and James Pringle replacing Southern. Wootton Bassett now had a good spell with Tasker and Mooney having shots saved before Tasker's shot was parried by the keeper, only to stick in the mud on the line. Mooney was first to react and tapped the ball home to complete his hat trick. Dean Ireland then replaced a hard working Tasker and immediately caused the Old Town defence problems. Wootton Bassett running out winners at 3-6. They have now scored 26 goals in their last four games to keep up their title challenge.
