Top of the table clash sees narrow defeat

Top of the table Lydiard vs. 2nd place Wootton Bassett provided the best game of the season so far in awful conditions.

A poor start by Wootton Bassett, who seemed content to just kick the ball anywhere instead of their usual passing game that they are capable of, provided Lydiard with the possession and space to create chances and put Wootton Bassett defence under pressure. Jamie Wakefield in goal making 3 excellent saves before Wootton Bassett started to play. Good work by Alfie Passingham sent top goal scorer James Tasker through, only to have his shot go just wide. The game was then end to end with both keepers making good saves. Just before half time Jordan Embling, Sam Jackson and Tasker combined before Joel Swann's shot hit the post and rebounded to safety. Half Time 0-0.

Lydiard went two up within minutes of the restart. The first, a through ball with the Bassett defence caught for pace, left Wakefield with no chance on at one on one and the second was a shot that Wakefield failed to handle and dropped over the line. Wootton Bassett got one back when Swann hit a shot from 18 yards and it went into the bottom corner but 2two minutes later it was 3-1 to Lydiard again, with Wakefield beaten 1 on 1 after a long through ball. Three substitutions of Martyn Plaistow for Embling, James Pringle for defender Leigh Little and Dean Ireland, making his first appearance of the season, for Jordan Daley. Wootton Bassett pushed forward, Craig Mooney's shot which went just wide, Tasker again causing the Lydiard defence problems, also put it wide. At the other end Nicholas Southern, George Bartlett, Pringle and Wakefield kept out the constant Lydiard threat. With five minutes to go it was 3-2 as Passingham and Tasker combined for Tasker to put it pass the keeper. Mooney & Plaistow both having shots blocked in the last few moments.
