16 Mar 2014 - Marlborough Youth (A)

Another glorious Sunday afternoon as the Whites travel to Marlborough for the return fixture, having only played them a few weeks ago when we were the wrong end of a 6-1 defeat at home.

Wootton Bassett get to kick-off and are playing down the slope in the first half. The ball comes back to James who is immediately under pressure but manages to win the ball back and delivers a chip forward and Mo is onto the ball ahead of the Marlborough defenders. Mo takes his time to select his shot and calmly slots the ball passed the keepers right hand and into the goal. Unofficial timing puts the goal at 17 seconds !

Bassett 1 – 0

Despite going behind so quickly Marlborough are not down and work the ball back up the slope. Harry G clears well out of defence to Sam in space on the left. Sam makes a good run and passes to Mo up ahead. Mo's path is blocked so he lays it back to Sam who has continued his run down the left wing. Samtake the ball in his stride and delivers a great cross right into the heart of the Marlborough box but Jack can't quite reach it to get the touch to increase the lead.

Kyle is great on the left of defence, chasing back and making great tackles and timely interceptions to snuff out the Marlborough moves down their right. Great headers too out of defence as Marlborough try the ball over the top of the Bassett defenders.

Zach wins the ball with a solid tackle at the back and slots a ball through the middle to James. James hits a great through ball at pace to Mo running the Marlborough defensive line. Mo is pushed out to the left but makes room to deliver a super cross towards the back post but James, who continued his progress upfield, can't quite get anything on it.

Bassett win a corner. Jack delivers into the box where Zach meets it with a fine header. The ball is cleared out but only as far as Kyle who nods it back passed the Marlborough keeper to make it 2.

Bassett 2 – 0

Bassett win a free kick INSIDE the Marlborough penalty are as the referee adjudges a back pass. The Marlborough players crowd the goal line but rather than the blast they are expecting the ball is pushed out wide to Sam in space but the resulting shot skims just wide of the left post.

Marlborough attack at pace down their right and beat the offside line but Kyle charges back and makes a superb covering tackle to again prevent the attack.

Jack makes a great run down the right touchline, beating defensive tackles before passing in to Mo inside of him. Mo moves the ball across to Zach alongside but his shot is just wide of the right hand post.

Marlborough are being penned back a bit by the Wootton Bassett forward play and positive approach but they do manage to break out of defence, and when they do it's at pace. Daniel spots the danger and is out quickly to intercept.

Marlborough win a free-kick on the edge of the Bassett area but the wall does it's job and the shot is blocked.

Bassett move the ball down the right again. A ball down the line from Jordan finds Ross in an advanced position. Ross battles away with the defender, trying to get a cross in, but manages to win a corner. The corner is swept in again and is cleared but only as far as Kieran who hits a first-time shot back at goal but the shot goes wide left.

The Whites attacking play is rewarded with another free-kick just outside the Marlborough box. Jordan steps up and tries to curl one in to the far post but it slips just wide.

Marlborough break back and a forward delivers a nice little chip through the Bassett defenders. The ball is cleared to another Marlborough player and a couple of quick passes sees them through the Bassett defence and in on goal where the final shot goes over Daniels outstretched hands to get one back for the home side on the stroke of half time.

Half Time - Wootton Bassett White 2 Ashton Keynes 1

Marlborough have the advantage of the slope in the second half and look to take advantage of this straight from the kick off, attacking in numbers and flooding forward. The Bassett defence is under sustained pressure and struggle for a bit to clear the ball up the hill without it coming straight back at them. The Whites manage an attack upfield but Marlborough win the ball back and feed it through the middle. There's a foul in the Bassett box as the Marlborough attacker shoots (and scores !) but the referee pulls play back and awards Marlborough a penalty which is confidently struck and Marlborough are back on terms.

Bassett 2 – 2

Harry M battle to win the ball on the right side of defence. He delivers a nice ball up to Jack who's involved in a battle of his own. Marlborough win the ball back and attack with a long ball but Harry G races back to make a timely interception.

Later, Harry G clears well up the line. Jack and Mo chase up well and force a corner. A great delivery from Sam makes the Marlborough punch to clear.

Bassett are enjoying a little more possession now and are applying some pressure of their own. A ball from Brad in midfield through the Marlborough defenders draws a foul on the edge of their ‘D'. Jordan's shot is blocked by the wall but comes out to Zach but his shot is deflected up over the bar.

The Whites win a succession of throws on the left, and eventually find Mo's head who nods it down to Brad who shoots first time from the edge of the box but the ball is over the bar.

Marlborough attack again and Bassett look to clear a loose ball but a defensive mix-up sees a Marlborough attacker through on goal and he has time to make a nice shot passed Daniel to give Marlborough the win.

Result - Wootton Bassett White 2 Ashton Keynes 3

Coaches Comments : Well done boys another close run game. Bad luck in the second half to allow 2 goals against as you showed good all round team work battling for each other. Keep the good work up see you Friday.
