02 Mar 2014 - Old Town United Blue (A)

Another cold and windy morning greeted the boys and spectators at the Croft Sports Centre for Wootton Bassett Whites second meeting of the season against Old Town Utd Blue.

From the start Nial and Zach link up with some nice one-touch play but, it's Old Town who have the first attacker as a through ball turns the Whites from offense into defense. Jordan L covers the sprinting striker well, forcing him to shoot wide of the Bassett goal.

Wootton Bassett pick up an Old Town goal-kick and Kieran goes on a run back towards the Old Town goal. He weaves in and out. beating tackles, and makes his way into the Old Town box where his shot crashes against the crossbar. The ball comes out to Nial following up but his shot is just wide.

Bassett win the ball back again and Kyle bursts down the left and shoots across goal from the corner of the box but his shot goes narrowly wide of the right-hand post.

Old Town attack down their right and a pass inside puts their forward through but Daniel rushes out and bravely dives to the attackers feet to prevent the shot.

Wootton Bassett enjoy a spell of possession but are unable to make significant progress. Old Town win the ball in defence and move the ball down the right. Some nice well-timed passing gives them a man over in on goal and he shoots passed Daniel to score.

Bassett 0 – 1

Old Town show their passing credentials again and work the ball out of defence with some crisp movement. Bassett can't get a challenge in Old Town move the ball all the way into the Bassett area where they extend their lead.

Bassett 0 – 2

Some Wootton Bassett pressure earns them a corner on the left. Jordan delivers it into the heart of the Old Town box and a bit a scramble ensues as both sets of players try to get some control. The ball comes out to Kyle on the edge of the box and he strikes a fantastic curling shot towards the far post, but it slams the post and is cleared.

Bassett win a free kick which is taken quickly to Kyle racing down the left again. Kyle's cross clears the goal-mouth and Jack collects the ball out right and crosses it straight back in. The ball is headed out to Brad who shoots, but his shot is headed clear only as far as Zach whose shot just clears the Old Town bar.

The Whites are pressing up and win the ball again in the Old Town half. Mo twists and turns and delivers a cross across the face of the goal but Kieran can't quite reach it, but Ross is there at the back post and calmly slots home for his first goal for Wootton Bassett Whites !

Bassett 1 – 2

Half Time - Wootton Bassett White 1 Old Town Utd Blue 2

After the break play is quite even but Old Town gather themselves and flood forward on the atack. The Bassett defence pushes the play wide but is unable to prevent the forward getting the cross into the Bassett box. Daniel is stuck in a crowd of players and tries to punch the ball clear but it comes out to an Old Town player with space to be able to shoot passed the crowd and just inside the post to extend Old Town's lead.

Bassett 1 – 3

Bassett still try to press forward to get back into the game and win a corner on the left. Another great delivery from Jordan L into the box finds Nial's head. The ball is partially cleared out to James lurking on the edge of the box and he shoots first time, hard and low, and finds the back of the Old Town net.

Bassett 2 – 3

Bassett attack down the left and a nicely weighted pass from James finds Mo. Mo makes a super turn and gets a shot away but the Old Town keeper saves well.

Old Town get some possession and play their way upfield again and put more pressure on the Bassett defence. After a succession of corners from the right are pushed behind, the 4th corner is delivered straight at the heart of the goal mouth and finds the net without being touched.

Bassett 2 – 4

Zach is battling hard in midfield, winning tackles and breaking up the Old Town passing game, and Bassett are able to get the ball down the left wing and win a corner. James delivers this one into the box where it is cleared out to Harry G whose shot from range goes over the Old Town bar.

Bassett keep pushing up trying to get a late goal to get back into the game but Old Town intercept and break back at pace. Nice passing again up the pitch sees an Old Town attacker in on goal and slots home passed a diving Daniel.

Result - Wootton Bassett White 2 Old Town Utd Blue 5

Coaches Comments : Again this score does not reflect the game. We were very unfortunate not to have scored 2 or 3 in the first half which would have changed the flow and inspired the boys to push harder, but with the near misses and the 2or 3 “lucky” goals against us heads dropped and it became a struggle to maintain shape and fluidness. We as a team, coaches and parents need to re install the confidence shown late last year before the rains came and help all the boys back on track.
