On a surprisingly warm and sunny Sunday morning, Wootton Bassett White's travelled to the fantastic Beversbrook Sport Facility to meet FC Calne Rovers in their second match of the season. New signings Harley Dack and Mo Cham were available to make their WBTFC debuts.

From the kick off Wootton Bassett started positively with some good passing play. Brad and Ross win a series of throw-ins, inching down the touchline. Then Mo gets involved with his first touch of the game and moves through down the left. He wins a corner which is delivered into the box by Jordan L but cleared by the Calne defence. Calne break out but Jack wins the ball back with a well timed tackle.

Ross and Mo combine again on the left and Mo makes another fast run towards the Calne area but this attack is broken up by the Calne defenders. Calne break quickly down the right and work the ball into the Bassett penalty area where their attacker is able to get a shot away which is well saved by Daniel.

Ross makes a good clearance to Harry who moves the ball upfield to Zak and Mo who are both pushing up. Zak manages to break through towards goal before being clattered by a clumsy challenge.

Shortly afterward Matthew gets possession and ships the ball to Zed. After a little run Zed plays a clever chip-pass over the Calne defenders to Mo rushing through. Mo is tackled and the ball goes for a Calne throw but Zak wins the ball back and rushes down the left before passing to Mo just inside. Mo makes room for a shot but it goes just wide.

Calne exert a bit of pressure and have a period of good possession. As they press up the field Harry makes a good covering tackle to stop this advance. On another James makes a clearance right over the Calne backline and Mo is able to rush through and beat the defenders to the ball but is foiled by some good covering by Calne defenders. James is making some great tackles to break up the Calne attacks.

Zak makes a great challenge and wins the ball in midfield. A nice 1-2 with Mo and Zak is able to shoot but this is blocked. Calne break down the left but Jack makes a great tackle to stop the attack. The Calne throw is intercepted by James who plays a long ball upfield. Harley takes the ball with a nice touch and turns the Calne defender neatly. A tidy pass to Jordan L, then on to Zed moves the ball into the Calne area but they win the ball back and break back downfield. Suddenly Calne are 3 on 1 but Nial makes a good header at the back to clear the ball away.

Zak and Jack combine nicely down the right and Jack delivers a lovely ball beyond the Calne defenders but Mo is not quite able to reach it to capitalise.

A nice simple passing move by Bassett starts down the right with James passing to Brad. Brad moves the ball onto Jordan, then onto Harley who plays back to Jordan who superbly turns a defender. Calne win the back however and break through the Bassett midfield and have a spare man unmarked in the box. Daniel keeps the scores level with a fantastic diving save down low to his right.

The Whites build again and win a corner on the left. The corner is taken quick and short and while Calne are still organising themselves Jordan delivers a lovely cross into the box. Wootton Bassett players are applying plenty of pressure but the ball is turned into the net by an unfortunate Calne defender.

The goal brings the half to an end.

Wootton Bassett again started the half brightly with a good series of passes. However, Calne win possession and push down the right, delivering a cross/shot from wide of the edge of the box which is pushed round the post by Daniel. Nice save! Calne's corner is headed well clear by James and it's Bassett's turn to break with Nial passing to Zak who jinks into the box and shoots. The shot is blocked and the rebound falls to Jack near the edge of the box but his first-time shot drift wide right.

Calne advance down the left this time and get a worrying cross into the White's area. Unfortunately the ball is miscontrolled near the Bassett line and it slips over the line for an own goal and Calne's equaliser.

Bassett 1 – 1

Bassett clear from a Calne corner and Zak makes a great run and delivers the ball neatly to Mo but his shot is just wide.

The Whites continue to press upfield but this allows Calne to break fast down the right. Their attacker beats 3 tackles on his way into the box and shoots past a diving Daniel to take the lead.

Bassett 1 – 2

Calne win the ball straight from the restart and charge down the right. The forward is left 1-on-1 with Daniel and gives him no chance.

Bassett 1 – 3

Matt makes a great tackle in defence and delivers a nice through ball to Jack. Jack is intercepted but Mo wins the ball back in midfield and plays in Harley in the centre. As he moves forward Harley is tripped but still manages to get up and get his shot away which is saved by the Calne keeper.

Wootton Bassett keep trying to push up, trying to pull one back, but this leaves them exposed at the back. Calne win the ball mid-half and are 3-on-2 with Bassett defenders and, using the space, are able to slam the ball into the roof of the Bassett net.

Bassett 1 – 4

A Bassett throw by Matthew on the left is picked up by Jack who crosses to Harley but he can't quite make the room to get his shot away. Calne push back and get though into the box again but the fierce shot is pushed over the bar by Daniel. Calne win the ball from the goal-kick. James makes a great tackle but the ball falls to another Calne forward who shoots the ball straight back to score.

Bassett 1 – 5

James makes a clearance which goes through the defence to Mo. Mo attacks but is pushed wide by the Calne defenders but he is able to make his cross into the box to Zed who shoots narrowly wide of the right post.

Calne come again and cross from the left. A lovely flick-on towards goal is met with a great reflex save from Daniel.

As Calne continue to apply pressure Matt makes a key tackle in front of goal. The ball is cleared but the Calne forward tries a long-range shot that just clears Daniels outstretched hand and falls into the back of the net.

Man Of The Match : Daniel York. It takes courage on your second league game to volunteer to be in goal. Originally Daniel was only playing half the match in goal but at half time volunteered to complete the game as goalie. He made some excellent saves to go in at the break with a clean sheet and was unfortunate to concede in the second half after making more outstanding saves. A well deserved award

Coaches Comments : A much improved first half on last week where the boys did the job they set out to do which was excellent. Unfortunately we lost our way a bit during the second half but it gives us lots of encouragement and positives to build on.
