Sunday 11th April 2010 - Highworth Town Juniors 'J' (A)

After a positive first attack on the hard and seriously undulating pitch, the boys were unlucky to concede an early goal in the first couple of minutes as a breakaway down the Highworth right was bundled into the Bassett net. Unfortunately, a corner shortly after the restart cleared the players gathering in the box only to fall to the feet of a Highworth player beyond the back post who slotted it in for an early 2-0 lead.

Harry, Scott and James performed well at the back under sustained Highworth pressure and Matt was always trying to break forward to link up with Oliver and Dec Cox up front. Ultimately the pressure told and Highworth nicked a third goal midway through the half.

The boys continued to play their game though and this was very nearly rewarded shortly after when a great passing move between Ollie and Matt gave Dec a shooting chance which went just wide. Bailey, continuing to grow in confidence, made some important interceptions and Charlie started to find some room down the right. But it was a move down the left which led to a nice pass from James to Dec who made a great turn to shoot past the Highworth keeper into the bottom corner of the net.

Half time 1 – 3.

Bassett looked stronger in the second half and made some telling moves to try and break down the Highworth defence. Matt really beavered away in midfield, and the defence were able to control the attacks coming at them. Harry made some telling tackles and Scott and Bailey were snuffing out the advancing forwards but it was a set piece that led to a Highworth tap in from a corner. 1– 4.

The boys did not give up hope though and continued to try and move the ball positively, and Ollie and Dec started to click down the right but a speculative shot from wide slipped through to give Highworth a 5 – 1 lead.

A great effort from Ollie was just pushed round the post for a corner and a super long range effort from Dec shortly after was only narrowly wide. Highworth grabbed another when leaving a lone attacker up the field to make it 1 – 6. Late on a pass from Scott allowed Ollie to provide a great cross which was narrowly missed by an advancing Charlie.

Man of the match: Oliver – worked hard and made some great link up play with Dec Cox.
