Sunday 21st February 2010 - Pewsey Vale (H)

What a difference a week makes! Bassett approached this fixture with understandable nerves after their mauling at the hands of Greenmeadow just 7 days ago, but from the first few kicks of the match it was clear that they had soon put this behind them and were determined to show what they can really do.

A early few chances from Pewsey were quickly followed by a strong attack ending with the ball breaking to Matt who made no mistake from the edge of the area, slamming it home into the roof of the net – 1 – 0

From this point on, Bassett played beautifully in all departments. Bailey, playing at the back for the first time, began to make some important contributions clearing the ball strongly on a number of occasions. James took the first of a series of dramatic throw-ins which caused havoc in the Pewsey penalty area – we seem to have found our own 'Delapidator'! It was from confusion following a throw-in that Coxy pounced for his first goal of the afternoon scoring confidently from a few yards out – 2 – 0

Bassett now seemed to drop into their stride and all players showed what they can do. George put in some delightful corners, just begging for a nod into the goal. Harry marshalled the defence very well, snapping at opposition heels and clearing usefully up field. It wasn't long before Bassett snatched a deserved third – again from the boot of Coxy who was now simply on fire – 3 – 0

Moments later, a Pewsey attack ended with a glorious save from Isaac who never lost concentration and proved a frustration to our opponents all afternoon. The next goal was scored in controversial circumstances as a Cox shot was smothered by the goalie who claimed that it hadn't crossed the line. The ref saw it differently, however, and Coxy was able to claim his second hat-trick of the campaign – 4 – 0

A beautifully worked and deserved goal from Pewsey ended a thoroughly entertaining half of football – 4 – 1

Half-time: 4 - 1

After the interval, Bassett went from strength to strength and it was another lovely passing move that ended with Coxy sliding the ball across to Ollie who surged into the box to score from close range on his home debut – 5 – 1

Pewsey showed some good passing of their own at times and a well-worked attack ended with a shot gave Isaac no chance – 5 – 2

This could have seen Bassett wobble, but not today as Isaac made another splendid save and Scott, now on for Bailey, tackled well and also made some runs forward.

Our 6th goal was a classic team effort with a strong defensive tackle seeing the goal passed to George who danced forward and slid a beautiful pass through to Coxy who, clean through, made no mistake to add yet another to his tally – 6 – 2

This was truly Coxy's day and his fifth goal (Bassett's seventh) was a superb strike from out wide and when he was subbed a few moments later ,the applause rang around the pitch – 7 – 2

This was a truly excellent performance from a team who had stared disaster in the face just a few days before and they should all feel very proud of themselves.

Man of the match: Declan Cox – there were many candidates this week but a truly outstanding display of the striker's art meant that there was only one possible winner today. A 5 goal haul and some great tackling should give him tremendous confidence for the rest of the season.
