Sunday 4th October 2009 - Wanborough Juniors (A)

After two disappointing results, the Bassett team arrived at Wanborough determined to put matters right but, as can be seen from the scoreline, this was a match that we will want to quickly forget.

It started well enough, with Dec Cox and Dec Coffey both looking lively and captain Isaac snuffing out some early chances but from the moment an unlucky own goal slipped past him things went from bad to worse. On a small pitch, the ball is soon lobbed into the danger area and it was just a couple of minutes later that Wanborough grabbed a second and then, as Bassett reeled from that, they quickly added a third.

Missing the power of Scott in defence and with Ben absent from our attack, we seemed particularly vulnerable today and heads dropped rather quickly.A lucky 4th slipped between Isaac legs as the Half Time whistle was blown and the lads trudged off with a mountain to climb in the second half.

Half-time : 0 – 4

We started the second period with great energy and George began to look for openings on the wing. James continued where he had left off making several powerful clearances and putting in a strong claim for man of the match. Matt never stopped snapping at the heels of the strong opposing midfielders. Harry made several telling tackles and showed some good distribution from the back. Our day was summed up, however, when a powerful attack ended with a Cox shot bouncing from the inside of the post along the goal line with the goalie helpless.

Wanborough then stepped up a gear themselves and finished the game with three more good goals. It was a hard pill to swallow, but we simply never got going today with a depleted team but we live to fight another day and with Wanborough waiting for us in the cup, we have an early chance to show them what we can really do in a couple of weeks time.

Man of the match: James Evans – a richly deserved trophy for James who has started to look the part in defence. On a day of negatives, he shone out with his powerful tackling and kicks out from the back.
