Sunday 21st March 2010 - Lambourn Sports (H)

With top scorer and ever-present Coxy missing today, it was going to be interesting to see how the lads responded without his powerful presence up front but from the start it was obvious that they were in the mood to get back to winning ways. After a brief Lambourn attack, it was all Bassett with Dec Coffey and Ollie up pushing forward threateningly and George beginning to find important space in the Lambourn half.

A corner floated over by him was soon snapped home by Dec after confusion in the penalty area: 1 – 0

This gave our lads the belief they have lacked in recent weeks and they were rarely troubled by the opposition. Harry made a number of great tackles and James showed, once again, the ability to intercept threatening balls as well as looking to launch forward movement up the flanks. Isaac was calm and controlled in goal and remained so all afternoon as he clocked up his first clean sheet of the season.

Throw-ins were a theme today (Rob would be pleased!) – in particular our inability to perform them legally! The ref's frequent reminders seem to fall on some deaf ears and this was, perhaps the only negative of an otherwise great display. Despite this, another Bassett goal always looked likely and it fell to George to notch it with an accurate strike from way out that the goalie spilled into the net behind him: 2 – 0

Half-time: 2 – 0

Scott now looks very secure at the back and he was typical of the strong defending that emerged at the start of the second period. Pinned back by some attacking Lambourn moves, Bassett held out well with, Matt (Fellah of the Month) Nicholls prominent as well. Charlie looked increasingly confident up front and was unlucky not to get on the end of a superb passing move which ended with a George cross into the box. There were a few other chances at both ends, but Lambourn never really threatened and Bassett couldn't turn their superiority into further goals.

A splendidly confident performance which, had Coxy been present, would surely have been even more comprehensive – but a very satisfying win nevertheless.

Man of the Match: George Staten

A really great performance all over the pitch from George today. Tracking back when needed but also making a number of strong runs forward, he showed good skill and commitment. He had a hand in the first goal and notched the second with aplomb.
