Sunday 13th December 2009 - Blunsdon Colts 'B' (H)

With a much stronger squad available this week, Bassett approached this fixture with enthusiasm and confidence, although it was Blunsdon who seemed quicker off the mark and they immediately launched a series of early attacks. A corner was flashed across and Isaac was brought into early service – he was destined for a busy afternoon!

It was Bassett who opened the scoring, however, when a strong shot from Dec Coffey from our second attack deflected off a Blunsdon defender and the goalie was unable to hold onto it: 1 – 0

Blunsdon looked dangerous all afternoon and Harry, Matt and James in defence had to be alert. Isaac was brought into repeated service as well, throwing himself at everything with his trusty leg cutting off a certain goal on at least two occasions.

James began to make surging runs forwards and, with Ben back into the line-up after several weeks away, we started once again to look dangerous on the break. It was Blunsdon who still looked the more likely to score, however, but they ended the half goal-less.

Half-time 1 – 0

The second half began in the same way as the first, with the opposition showing the early threat and this time they were rewarded when a rare mix up in the Bassett defence ended with the ball dribbling over the line as it evaded Isaac's desperate gloves: 1 – 1

The game then settled into a pattern of Blunsdon pressure with dangerous looking Bassett counter-attacks being launched whenever possible. George, Dec and Coxy all looked to find the killer pass. Matt was inspired, making a number of crucial interceptions and tackles and Bailey sought space up front. Harry played his part in a strong defensive display, although he always had an eye for the forward pass.

Our second goal was a classic set piece effort. George launched a pin-point corner which Dec Cox volleyed home beautifully from the edge of the area, leaving the Colts' goalie grasping at thin air: 2 – 1

This set-back seemed to inspire Blunsdon to even greater efforts and Isaac was forced into a series of inspired saves, tipping a couple over and smothering others at the feet of opposing forwards. He really seemed impregnable today and his calm confident approach gave the team a strong backbone to launch further breakaways. Dec Cox had a couple of golden chances to increase his goal tally, including a one-on-one with the goalie which was saved well.

Our third goal was another breakout, with George advancing strongly and sliding a lovely pass to James, now up front, who took the ball out right before firing in a superb shot that nestled into the far corner: 3 – 1

This was a kick in the teeth for our opponents who just couldn't make their pressure tell and the match ended with Bassett victorious.

Man of the match: Isaac Brannick – a superb display from our keeper who was a match for everything thrown at him today. He gave us the solid base to build a great and hard-fought victory.
