Sunday 24th January 2010 - Ramsbury Juniors (A)

With Ben now finally moving on and Dec Coffey out through injury, the B team faced the first fixture after the long lay-off with depleted numbers and it took a few moments for the boys to find their feet. Nevertheless, after some early Ramsbury pressure Bassett started to put together some delightful passing moves. Coxy, George and Matt nearly conjuring an early break through with Coxy skimming the post after a great interchange. James showed a lot of appetite for the ball and Harry made some good defensive interceptions alongside a strong-looking Scott at the back. Ramsbury did hit the post, but there were few signs of the cruel twists to come. This evenly matched 'end-to-end' period came to an abrupt end when a strong Ramsbury attack ended with the ball in the net: 0 – 1

Before our lads had time to catch their breath, the ball was almost immediately booted the short distance into our penalty area and another strong shot was fired home: 0 – 2

Then to our disbelief, a few moments later yet another strong attack from a Ramsbury wasn't cleared and before we knew it the third goal was slotted home past a despairing Isaac.: 0 – 3

It really was a case of a mad few moments which took the match beyond the Bassett lads before they had really had a chance to re-group!

There was still time for a strong shot from James and another powerful Ramsbury rattling of the crossbar before the half-time whistle blew.

Half-time: 0 – 3

Basset began the second half looking much more composed and they went on to give a much better account of themselves. All the team ran their hearts out trying to pull the game around, but it was not to be our day and a scrambled effort from a corner put Ramsbury a further goal ahead: 0 – 4

James caught the eye again with a mazy dribble into the box and a header from a George corner that skewed just wide. Isaac stopped a couple of certain goals late on but it was all rather too late and the crazy three-goal blitz of the first half really made everything seem rather pointless.

A game to quickly forget. At least the lads will have a chance to get revenge later in the season when Ramsbury come to Rylands Way. Let's hope we can do to them what we did to Wanborough!

Man of the match: James Evans. James never gave up and showed great determination to get the ball - he is also showing increasing skill with each game. On another day, he might have snatched a hat-trick!
