Sunday 8th November 2009 - Pewsey Vale (A)

On a chilly November morning, Bassett arrived at distant Pewsey determined to continue their recent revival and finally put the horror of Wanborough well behind them. A sharply sloping pitch gave our lads the advantage in the first half and they soon went about their business with Coffey and Cox testing the defence early on.

Scott and Harry made some good early tackles and George also looked lively but it was Pewsey who made the early break through. A strong shot slithered from Isaac's arms and barely dribbled over the line for a lucky opener: 1 – 0

This gave Pewsey some extra energy and, for a while they looked threatening but Bassett never let them get comfortable. Matthew, in particular, frustrated the Pewsey attack by intercepting at crucial moments and, despite a few good chances, Isaac was unbeatable. Our equaliser came after a delightful move started by George who slid a pass to Coxy who, in turn, found Dec Coffey in space giving him a gilt-edged chance which he took slamming the ball to the right of a despairing 'keeper to open his scoring for the season: 1 – 1

Further chances fell to both sides but an entertaining half ended with scores level.

Half-time: 1 – 1

With an uphill half in prospect, Bassett re-started on the back foot, with Pewsey making some strong attacks. James was imperious in defence, however, and Isaac carried on as he left off pulling off further remarkable stops. Bailey fought hard up front and we always looked as if we could snatch the lead with our enterprising approach.

It was solo effort from George that saw us go ahead with a lovely dribble and shot going in off the keeper to set up an exciting last 10 minutes: 2 – 1

For a while, it looked like we would grab a third, as Pewsey wobbled and Coffey, Cox and Staten threatened to open them up by neat passing and an eye for goal. Our opposition found thief feet, though, and it was Pewsey who ended stronger, snatching a goal from a near post corner to bring the scores level: 2 – 2

It was now anybody's game and one goal would settle it. There was one heart-stopping moment when a strong shot from a Pewsey free-kick whistled past the post right at the death but the game soon ended in a draw which seemed the right reward for both sides.

Man of the match: George Staten

Again, many contenders this week from a strong team showing but George gets the nod for a skilful and hard-working performance which kept the Bassett machine firing. Some lovely corners and a well-taken goal.
