Sunday 27th September 2009 - Ramsbury Juniors (H)

For the second match running, a scoreline gives completely the wrong impression of a match. Bassett dominated this game from start to finish and how Ramsbury managed to leave with all three points must have been as unbelievable to them as it was to our players! We had corner after corner and shot after shot – so many that this reporter lost count - whereas Ramsbury's contribution amounted to some stout defending and two shots - one of which went in.

Kicking downhill in the first half, Bassett soon dropped into a delightful passing game. Dec Coffey chasing and harrying the opposition, distributing the ball beautifully. Dec Cox had a number of shots which, with a little more accuracy, could have opened our account although it was his passing that took the eye. He combined well with George and it seems just a matter of time before our scoring would start.

Scott was extremely effective in defence and a number of tackles saw him snuff out rare Ramsbury attacks. Alongside him, Harry put in another strong performance. Isaac was just a spectator, although his kicks out were dangerous down the slope.

Matt worked well up the wing with some delightful passes finding their mark and Bailey, finding himself thrown on up front, seemed determined to open his scoring account.

One lovely solo run from George seemed destined to end in a goal, but he just skewed it wide after dribbling through a number of players on the right. James showed some lovely touches of skill and some firm headers although he too was unable to truly trouble the Ramsbury defence.

In the end, though, Bassett didn't make the most of their downhill advantage and the half ended goalless.

Half-time: 0 – 0

The second half saw a similar amount of dominance from our lads but, with a little more threat from Ramsbury, our defenders had to be alert and Isaac was forced into a couple of saves. George was still required to float in corner after corner, however, as Bassett continued to dominate. A number of chances went begging although the Ramsbury keeper was never truly tested.

As time ticked on, the inevitable breakaway goal looked all too likely and it came after a rare defensive slip by the Bassett backs. A Ramsbury player burst through and slotted past a stranded Isaac: 0 – 1

Although there was still time for more Bassett attacks, it just didn't seem to be our day and the game petered out to a disappointing second defeat of the season.

In the penalty shoot-out after the match, Bassett slammed home goal after goal while Ramsbury missed with their first 6. If only we had shown such goal scoring determination in the match itself!

Man of the match: Declan Coffey. Declan was a bundle of energy who never stopped running throughout the match. His closing down of the opposition was a big factor in keeping Ramsbury quiet for much of the match.
