Sunday 2nd May 2010 - Hungerford Town 'A' (H)

In the final game of the season, Bassett "A" Team travelled to Lydiard Park to play a home game against Hungerford Town. A small tight pitch welcomed both teams, but at least the overnight rain had sunk into the top layer, allowing the players to put on studs for the first time in a few weeks.

Bassett had much of the early play and created the first opening on 2 minutes when Tyler met a Callum corner, the ball bouncing up for Lewis to head goalwards. The Hungerford keeper making a good save as the ball looped towards the top corner. Two minutes later the roles were reversed when Lewis became provider for Tyler. A long ball from the back saw Tyler run across the keeper to take the ball, the keeper recovering well to block Tyler's shot and clear the ball.

Bassett continued to have much of the play and went ahead on 8 minutes when Beckham cleared from defence, the ball bounced and Tyler hit a first time volley from 15 yards that flew over the Hungerford keepers head and into the back of the net.

Bassett extended their lead a few minutes later when Euan hooked the ball clear. This time Tyler controlled the lose ball and went for guile rather than power, lobbing the Hungerford keeper from distance.

A minute later Bassett came close again as Beckham went down the left, his cross was cleared but Lewis picked up the ball and drove a shot narrowly over the bar from just outside the Hungerford area.

On 16 minutes Bassett created two further chances. Firstly a free kick was curled round the wall but against the post by Euan. Moments later, Tyler had a fine strike saved by the Hungerford keeper low down at his left hand post.

The foundations to enable Bassett to be such an attacking force were laid by an exceptional performance in defence by Alanah. Never beaten, Alanah won every tackle and cleared any danger when it arose.

It was on 21 minutes when Hungerford created their first real chance. A smart passing move found the Hungerford forward free on the back post, his shot being well saved by Conor. Euan cleared the resulting corner at the near post with a strong header. The ball fell to Callum, who turned and advanced through midfield. Callum laid a short ball off to Euan who shot to score at the front post from 12 yards.

Half Time: 3-0

Bassett started the second half as they finished the first, that is, on the attack. On 27 minutes a right wing cross was dropped by the Hungerford keeper, the ball squirting onto the post before being kicked to safety. A minute later a firm Euan shot produced a fine diving save from the keeper.

Bassett extended their lead moments later when Zach chased down the Hungerford defender, winning the ball and producing a fine ball to Euan in space. Two touches and then Euan, unleashed a power drive from 7 yards that burst the back of the Hungerford goal. A minute later Euan almost got his hat trick when he produced a spectacular overhead kick which went inches wide.

Tem minutes of the second half had gone before Hungerford created a real chance on the Bassett goal and then they had two in quick succession. The first saw the shot go narrowly wide. The second saw Conor make a fine save when the Hungerford forward had eventually escaped the grips of the Bassett defence to be one-on-one against him.

With 40 minutes gone a Hungerford throw was cleared by Beckham from deep inside his own half. The ball flew through the air, over the Hungerford keeper and bounced off the top of the cross bar. Tyler was on hand to pick up the lose ball but unfortunately fired his shot over the bar.

This was the last goal mouth action of the game as the chances dried up at both ends. Both teams continued to work very hard but the final ball somehow seemed to disappear and good approach play was squandered.

Full-time: 4-0

Match Analysis: An excellent display to round off the season, four excellent goals and another clean sheet. A result that saw the team finish joint second in the league with Wroughton and Highworth Town . The game was killed off by Bassett with an excellent first half display, built on strong defence and lethal finishing.

Player of the Match: Two goals of real quality and a tremendous work rate, today's POTM award goes to Tyler Fitchett.

Team: Conor Chivers, Lewis Ward, Alanah Edwards, Euan Burke (Capt), Callum Bridges, Zach Bunce, Tyler Fitchett, Beckham Hulbert
