Sunday 15th November 2009 - Old Town United (A)

After a 3 week break due to half term and bad weather, the "A" Team travelled to a new ground to play against Old Town United. The large pitch and wet long grass was going to test the stamina of both teams following the enforced lay-off.

The opening stages were fairly even with both teams trying to play passing football but no clear chances were created. The first shot of the game came on 6 minutes when Callum crossed from the right. The ball drifted over the area but Jordan Thompson returned it back into the box, for Callum to shoot narrowly over.

Bassett had to wait another 10 minutes before getting another shot at goal. This time, Euan, running from midfield saw his shot well saved by the keeper. A minute later, a similar run and shot produced another good save from the Old Town keeper.

Bassett now had the momentum. Alanah and Jordan Taylor were comfortable in defence and Beckham was working hard in midfield. Bassett eventually took the lead following the move of the match. Alanah made a great tackle in defence. The lose ball was passed by Jordan Taylor to Jordan Thompson. Another quick ball found Euan advancing down the right. Euan's low cross was met by Lewis and his first time shot found the net from 5 yards.

Although having the majority of the ball Bassett struggled to break down the Old Town defence. The final action of the half saw Lewis pick up Beckham's long throw. Lewis cut in from the left and crossed for Jordan Thompson to shoot just over.

Half Time: 1-0

The second half started at pace and Old Town created the first chance but a well timed tackle blocked a goal bound shot. Bassett came right back and found themselves 3-on-1 with a text book counterattack. The ball broke out of the Bassett area and Zach found Jordan Thompson down the left. A strong run and a shot-come-cross was met by Zach, but unfortunately the ball went narrowly wide.

Five minutes later, Jordan Thompson picked up a goal kick in midfield. Two touches and his long range shot went narrowly wide of the angle. On 35 minutes Old Town were awarded a penalty for a push in the box. The Old Town forward took the pen and Conor made a fine save to keep Bassett in front.

On 43 minutes Beckham worked hard on the edge of the Old Town area to win the ball. He passed the ball square for Callum whose shot was pushed around the upright by the diving Old Town keeper.

As the final whistle approached the tension started to increase. Old Town almost drew level when their forward broke clear and advanced on goal. Euan chased hard to keep the pressure on the forward and then Conor came off his line to make a very brave save. Bassett went straight back at Old Town and Lewis picked up Beckham's throw down the right wing. Lewis beat the defender but his cross was cleared for a corner by the Old Town defender just before Jordan Thompson got on the end of it.

The final action of the game saw Bassett increase their lead. Beckham and Lewis interchanged passes down the left and then Beckham laid the ball off to Jordan Thompson. Jordan's well struck shot flew just inside the post to finally take the game beyond Old Town.

Full-time: 2-0

Match Analysis: Another victory for the A Team who showed stacks of courage and endeavour to finally overcome a well organised Old Town United. Alanah and Jordan were outstanding in defence, keeping the shots at Conor to a minimum. The midfield worked hard to get from box-to-box on this big pitch and the forwards kept chasing the ball to give the Old Town defence no time to settle. A fourth clean sheet in a row and two well taken goals are just rewards for the team following the effort they had all put in.

Player of the Match: Didn't miss a tackle and used the ball wisely. Today's POTM award goes to Alanah Edwards for her quality performance.

Team: Conor Chivers, Lewis Ward, Jordan Taylor, Alanah Edwards, Euan Burke (Capt), Callum Bridges, Zach Bunce, Jordan Thompson, Beckham Hulbert
