Sunday 18th October 2009 - Ashton Keynes 'E' (A)

The picturesque home ground of Ashton Keynes FC was where the "A" Team started their defence of the North Wilts District Cup. With only 7 players available this could have been a big test for the players.

A frenetic first few minutes saw both teams trying hard without any clear cut chances being created. On 4 minutes Jordan Taylor picked up a lose ball and released Euan. Euan beat a man and crossed low from the left. Lewis met the ball on the run and with a first time shot scored his first goal of the season to make it 1-0 Bassett.

A minute later Bassett won a free kick about 5 yards out of the AK area. Euan lifted the ball into the box and beat the keeper at the near post to make it 2-0. Bassett nearly went 3-0 up when Callum crossed from the left, the ball was picked up by Jordan Thompson on the right, who passed it back into the box, only for Euan to shoot narrowly over.

On 9 minutes Bassett broke down the right as Jordan Thompson found Lewis. An excellent cross was tipped away by the keeper. Callum chased the ball and took a quick throw to Euan. Euan advanced into the AK area and his shot found the net to make it 3-0 Bassett.

Bassett were now in total control of the game, passing the ball wisely and working hard for each other. On 10 minutes Jordan Taylor took a quick free kick and found Callum in space, Callum turned smartly and shot just wide of the right hand post.

Two minutes later Bassett were awarded a free kick in a similar spot to the one that Euan had scored from earlier. This time Lewis floated the ball into the AK box as if it were a beach ball. Euan's header hit the bar and unfortunately went over. A minute later AK threatened the Bassett goal for the first time with a great shot going just over.

This attack spurred AK on and on 16 minutes, a long kick from the AK goal keeper bounced into the Bassett box. Conor pushed the ball away from the advancing forward but couldn't keep hold of it. He then chased and harried another AK forward to stop any shot being made and finally cleared the ball from outside his area.

Bassett came straight back at AK and a smart move saw Lewis cut in from the left and curl a shot narrowly wide of the AK upright. The last action of the half saw Jordan Taylor hit a screamer of a free kick narrowly wide of the left hand post.

Half Time: 3-0

AK started the second half brightly and an early attack saw a shot well saved by Conor. On 3 minutes Callum took a quick throw to Lewis, who knocked it back and Callum's shot curled onto the roof of the net.

On 6 minutes Lewis made a tackle near his own box. The ball smacked into his face and rebounded to Euan. Some excellent refereeing allowed the game to continue and Euan ran from his own half with the ball and struck a well placed shot inside the left hand post. (Lewis is claiming a 2 point assist but we'll have to see the NWFA ruling on this one!) 4-0 Bassett!!

The move of the game came on 9 minutes. Alanah broke up an AK attack. Jordan Taylor advanced the ball from defence and passed to Callum. Callum cut in from the left and found Jordan Thompson, who in turn found Euan. Euan drove into the box and shot which was well saved by the AK goal keeper, only for Lewis to follow-in and put Bassett 5-0 up from close range.

A minute later Alanah again got the better of the AK forward and passed to Euan. Euan found Callum whose shot again went narrowly wide. With 5 minutes to go the rule book had to be called for. Lewis ran onto a loose ball and shot towards goal. A deflection took the ball straight into the arms of the keeper. Claims for a "back pass" were turned down! If it were Liverpool and playing at Anfield I'm sure a free kick would have been awarded.

Bassett piled on the pressure. A quick throw found Euan who passed to Jordan Taylor, his shot grazing the cross bar. On 17 minutes Callum found Jordan Taylor down the left, his cross was met by Jordan Thompson to make it 6-0 Bassett.

The final action of the match saw AK attack down the right. The smart move ended with a fine shot hitting the side netting of the Bassett goal.

Full-time: 6-0

Match Analysis: Another excellent win for Bassett who worked hard for each other with only 7 players available. There was some excellent passing football and six well taken goals. At times, the eagerness to score saw Bassett shoot when a pass to a team mate would have been the better, and more fruitful, option. The defence kept a third clean sheet on the bounce which pays credit to their organisation and determination.

Player of the Match: Strong running with a tremendous shot, today's POTM award goes to Euan Burke.

Team: Conor Chivers, Lewis Ward, Jordan Taylor, Alanah Edwards, Euan Burke (Capt), Callum Bridges, Jordan Thompson
